Purpose & Objective of the Job

The Executive Director, Medical Performance and Outcomes (MPO) will establish the Medical Performance and Outcomes capability globally to drive the value of Medical Affairs. S/he will report to the Vice President of Medical Excellence and is a key strategic leader for BMS Medical Affairs. The Executive Director is responsible for leading the measurement strategy development and tactical planning to demonstrate the value of medical initiatives across BMS and enable data-driven decision making. The objective of this capability is to deliver operational excellence, enable process improvement, and elevate the overall impact of the Medical therapeutic area (TA) strategies.

Leading a cross-TA team, the Executive Director of MPO serves as a trusted and objective strategic partner to Medical Directors across BMS TAs – delivering transformative value through data, actionable intelligence, and insights to inform tactics supporting medical strategy.

The incumbent will apply enterprise mindset and lead strategically across the BMS matrix by working with stakeholders from WW Medical and local market medical teams, Research & Early Development (R&ED), Global Drug Development (GDD), Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR), Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Corporate Affairs, Competitive Intelligence, Legal, Business Insights & Analytics (BI&A) and other key functions. S/he will collaborate with the Compliance and Legal Departments to ensure that all activities are conducted in a compliant manner with BMS policies, procedures, and local regulatory/legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities

As a core member of the Medical Excellence Leadership Team, the Executive Director, Medical Performance and Outcomes (MPO) is accountable for the following  

  • Establish the Medical Performance and Outcomes capability, including vision, strategy and tactical plan and provide ongoing strategic direction and leadership for the MPO function.
  • Drive impactful measurement and evaluation of Medical Affairs activities in alignment with organizational objectives and priorities.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive frameworks and methodologies to measure the performance and outcomes of medical affairs initiatives.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of tactics (e.g., medical content, evidence generation activities, insights development) and provide recommendations to drive decision making.
  • Serve on Medical and cross functional leadership forums as needed.
  • Partner closely with BI&A, Medical Directors across TAs, publications, and field medical stakeholders to support MPO’s strategic goals and delivery of impactful recommendations.
  • Contribute to decision-making that informs the strategic direction of the broader Medical Excellence function.
  • Integrate country and local needs into global co-created measurement strategies and tactics.
  • Develop a high-performance culture and team by leading and mentoring direct reports, fostering innovation, collaboration, customer focus, personal accountability, and a commitment for results.
  • Effectively manage resources and budget to deliver on business commitments.

Qualifications & Experience

  • BA/BS degree required; Advanced degree preferred (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD, MBA)
  • 15 years of experience working within the pharmaceutical industry, global experience strongly preferred.
  • 8 years of demonstrated management and leadership experience mandatory; life sciences management consulting experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to identify and implement impact measures, organize, and analyze data, and interpret and synthesize complex reports to derive key outcomes and develop consumable content for diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional business acumen and ability to think strategically, impact and influence senior executives to drive optimal business results.
  • Advanced leadership skills, experience in managing global/virtual teams, understanding of Research and Drug Development portfolio, and the ability to communicate data in an impactful way.
  • Proven experience in building new capabilities, establishing strategic direction/vision for an organization, and proven ability to implement such vision; ability to take educated risk, rise above technical expertise; demonstrating judgement, wisdom and understanding of impact.
  • Expert data storytelling, communication, and presentation skills to effectively communicate complex ideas, advise senior leadership, and ensure medical impact.
  • Ability to lead teams through direct and indirect influence to drive optimal business results in a complex matrix organization.
  • Experience delivering strategic recommendations and solutions to inform resource allocation, prioritization, and KPI tracking to assess business value and impact.
  • Demonstrated managerial skills in talent development through coaching, leading, and mentoring direct reports, and building a highly capable team to meet short- and long-term business needs.
  • Strong enterprise mindset and ability to navigate a complicated matrix environment.
  • Ability to prioritize business needs and be decisive in addressing business objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with critical internal stakeholders to understand and meet TA franchise and Market business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience within oncology, hematology, cardiovascular, immunology and/or neuroscience
  • Deep understanding of home office and Field Medical roles, remits, and strategies
