Associate Director, BMS Patient Advocacy, Oncology

As an integral member of the BMS Patient Advocacy team, this person will be an active contributor to the development of advocacy strategies for oncology and will serve as one of the execution leads for oncology advocacy.  This role builds Bristol Myers Squibb’s reputation as a leading scientific organization with a patient-centric culture, through innovative and aligned projects, and by being a trusted partner (internally and externally) focused on the patient across the continuum of product development and commercialization.

  • The Associate Director (AD) will assist in establishing and managing relationships with multiple patient advocacy organizations and professional societies, with a primary focus on issues affecting patient access to quality cancer care, improving health outcomes, and health equity. 
  • Determine the short and long-term impact of changes in the health care system, develop strategic approaches to addressing these changes, and develop long-term relationships with advocacy and professional organizations to enable innovative solutions to the issues facing cancer patients.
  • Engender strategic alliances and collaborative initiatives aimed at driving improved access environments and sustainability of health care.
  • Leverage and elevate patient insights learned from the patient community and serve as an internal resource to champion and incorporate patient perspectives into all appropriate initiatives that help patients by addressing disease-specific challenges, increasing disease awareness, decreasing time to diagnosis and increasing access to therapy.
  • Collaborate with the matrix cross-functional teams (commercialization, medical, market access, policy and government affairs, health economics and outcomes research, clinical development, communications, etc.) on a daily basis to build alignment, drive deliverables, and achieve timelines that position BMS as a leading and trusted partner.
  • Promote an environment that incorporates the patient perspective across the continuum of product development through commercialization.
  • Develop and share advocacy best practices, create efficiencies, and leverage expertise worldwide.
  • Minimize compliance risk, and protect and enhance company reputation by ensuring adherence to uncompromising ethics and to relevant guidelines and regulations.
  • Generate innovative business concepts and search for novel approaches to the issues impacting cancer patients and the healthcare system.
  • Support the building of a leading and differentiated patient advocacy function that is well-respected within BMS and by collaborators and advocacy partners.

  • Highly external-facing role with daily interactions with patient advocates (email, phone, live)

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong track record of superior decision making and performance in developing and driving strategic projects, including managing budgets
  • Ability to build virtual teams and influence all levels of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently or collaboratively as appropriate
  • Knowledge in one or more oncology therapeutic focus areas is strongly preferred
  • Experience with oncology patient advocacy organizations is preferred
  • Ideally, candidate should have at least 8 – 10 years of experience in pharmaceuticals and working with external stakeholders
  • BA or BS required. Masters degree or other advanced degree preferred
  • Travel required – minimum 30%
