Position Summary:
This position is an opportunity to join Bristol Marine at the Wardwell Boatyard location in Bristol, RI as a foreman in our busy service department. Wardwell Boatyard is a full service facility that specializes in both maintenance and refits of recreational yachts from 20' - 75'. The qualified candidate for this position will have advanced knowledge of both gas and diesel marine engines, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and repair all associated systems. This Service Foreman is expected to be a highly billable role who leads by example to ensure the service department is performing work that is is alignment with our customers expectations of both superior quality and value while also assisting with work scheduling and training/development of technicians with the service department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop rapport and working relationship with mechanical department, other supervisors, staff and General Manager. Show leadership qualities and demonstrate willingness to work with and for others.
- Develop and implement a system for increasing mechanical service revenue while also increasing the yards mechanical capabilities. System should include a replicable process for tracking and identifying customers mechanical service project needs. Mechanical foreman should take a lead role in communicating with project managers to present and sell work to customers.
- Work closely with office staff to acquire skills necessary for successful leadership (PierVantage and Google Cloud software, scheduling, planning)
- Exceed billable percentage goal of 75% (assuming a steady stream of work is provided and there is a consistent back-log). Work strategically with technicians within department to increase their billable percentage above 80%
- Attend organizational meetings for planning work for department, communicate with office and administrative staff to facilitate schedule of service
- Perform highest-quality work without oversight, re-work or warranty.
- Service, troubleshoot and repair basic marine systems: engines, generators, fresh water, pumps, steering, electrical system, etc.
- Attend official off-site training (ABYC, Mack Boring/Yanmar, Cummins, etc) in order to round out yard and professional capability. Research training opportunities for department and coordinate training schedule for technicians with HR representative and General Manager
- Be available for "emergency" repairs and service during boating season after hours and on weekends (compensated at overtime rate).
- Perform repair and other work assignments at both on-site (in Bristol or Somerset yards) and off-site (Newport, etc) work. Technician to be compensated at market rate for travel miles beyond "normal" travel to/from work.
- Arrive at facility in time for 6:55 am morning meeting and put in a full 8-hour work day.
- While a 40 hour work week is standard, overtime is expected as needed driven by workload and seasonal demands
- Communicate through cell phone, text, email etc as needed by self and supervisor to maximize lines of communication. Costs for cell/data plan are initially to be carried by employee, but if use exceeds "reasonable" amount for work then Bristol Marine will contribute to offset additional expense from work calls, texts and emails.
- Communicate to project managers on progress and needs with jobs, but stop short when estimate hours need to be revisited so that project manager can help strategize and communicate with the customer.
- Provide and supplement own personal tools to perform work both at Bristol Marine facilities and off-site (exceptions are made for specific tools that are needed by other techs and will be purchased as property of Bristol Marine).
- Based primarily in Bristol, RI yard.
