We are seeking a committed and professional Marine Services Officer to support the safe, efficient and effective operation of the City Docks Estate. You will contribute to the daily management of quaysides, waterways and associated infrastructure, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, including Harbour Acts, Byelaws, and established safety procedures.

The role provides critical front-line operational support across the docks, including undertaking patrols, delivering tidal operations, operating bridges and equipment, and responding to emergency situations. The Marine Services Officer will assist in maintaining high standards of service delivery and ensuring the continued safe use of the harbour environment by all users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake daily operational tasks to ensure the smooth running of the Marine Services Section.
  • Ensure compliance with all Harbour Acts, Byelaws, safety systems and procedures.
  • Maintain high levels of user satisfaction, with a target of 85% or above.
  • Provide an operational presence as part of a shift rota, including unsocial hours, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Identify, report and advise on day‑to‑day operational issues within the City Docks Estate.
  • Assist Marine Services Supervisors in coordinating leisure, event and recreational use of the water space.
  • Operate all plant and machinery required for tidal operations, and contribute to light maintenance of equipment and installations to ensure they remain in good working order.
  • Operate bridges and other key installations within the City Docks.
  • Provide operational cover at Netham Lock as required.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations, including water‑based incidents and situations involving individuals in crisis.

Additional Requirements

  • A suitable level of physical fitness, including the ability to work from small boats.
  • The ability to swim.
  • Willingness to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, bank holidays and other unsocial hours.
  • Ability to manage challenging and sensitive situations, including responding to individuals in mental health crisis and undertaking rescue actions where necessary.
  • Commitment to undertaking all required training relevant to the role.
  • Flexibility to accommodate changes in work schedules at short notice, particularly during tidal operations.
