Benefits Manager (Contract)
Location: Hybrid (U.S.-based)
Duration: ~6 months (contract)
Reports to: Senior Benefits Leader
Position Summary
An established, growth-stage organization in the life sciences sector is seeking a Benefits Manager (Contract) to lead strategic, project-based benefits initiatives. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and optimizing employee benefits programs, while ensuring compliance and improving overall employee experience.
This is a hands-on, execution-focused role suited for someone who can independently manage projects from concept through delivery and collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external vendors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end implementation of new benefits programs (e.g., wellness, retirement, voluntary benefits)
- Manage vendor selection processes (RFPs, evaluation, recommendations)
- Oversee vendor transitions, system integrations, and data migrations
- Develop and manage project plans, timelines, and communications
- Ensure alignment with budget, compliance, and organizational goals
- Identify and implement process improvements in benefits administration
- Analyze market trends and benchmarking data
- Partner with HR, Finance, Payroll, IT, and Legal teams
- Maintain documentation, SOPs, and reporting accuracy
- Create employee communications and education materials
- Support change management and adoption strategies
- Ensure compliance with regulations such as ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA
- Assist with audits, filings, and plan documentation
Qualifications
Required:
- 5–8 years of experience in benefits administration
- Proven experience leading benefits implementations or large projects
- Strong knowledge of U.S. benefits regulations
- Experience managing vendors and multiple concurrent projects
Preferred:
- Experience in high-growth or transformation environments
- Familiarity with HRIS systems (e.g., Workday)
- Experience supporting open enrollment
Skills
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Excellent communication (written & verbal)
- Advanced Excel/data analysis skills (pivot tables, lookups)
- High attention to detail and compliance focus
- Ability to work independently and drive execution
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree (HR or related field)
- Certifications such as CEBS, PHR/SPHR, SHRM-CP/SCP preferred
