Adjustment Counselor / Sub-Separate Program (STARS)

Anticipated Start Date: August 31, 2026
Salary Range: $53,000 - $62,000
Reports to: Principal, Special Education Director
Responsibilities: The goal of the Adjustment Counselor is to assist students in developing strategies that will increase positive growth and success. The responsibilities of this School Adjustment Counselor will be to support socially and emotionally challenged students, including our self-contained therapeutic and specialized classrooms, providing interventions and support for school engagement.
Essential Functions:
•Identify and assess academic and behavioral concerns through analysis of factors impacting student adjustment including factors in the home, school, and community. Assist students in identifying, modifying and/or changing behavior that interferes with achievement and school adjustment
•Develop and implement measurable goals and objectives which address students social/emotional needs (related to school adjustment and DBT/CBT Therapy)
•Provide individual and group therapeutic counseling to students
•Provide strategies, support and resources to assist teachers in managing social/emotional issues in their classroom
•Collaborate with school staff and other school district personnel in implementing strategies to promote student learning
•Provide crisis intervention services
•Conduct classroom meetings, psycho-educational social skills groups, and classroom presentations on identified areas of concern for the students
•Participate as a member of school-based teams to develop interventions for promoting students’ academic success, including modeling and coaching of strategies
•Serve as a liaison between families and the school to positively promote a collaborative process in educational planning for students by encouraging family participation in the school setting
•Determine and implement appropriate therapeutic strategies to effect changes in behavioral and social interactions of students and their families
•Consult and collaborate with outside agencies and hospitals, Refer students and/or families to appropriate community agencies
•Acts as a resource person for students, families and staff regarding any adjustment or social/emotional related problems
•Increase the understanding of teachers, parents, and others in the community of the causes for the problems that students may have
•Ensure the security and maintenance of clinical confidentiality at all times
•Complete all reports in relation to IEP/504 goals and progress monitoring
•Fulfill special education responsibilities including: a member of the evaluation team and participating in the Team Meetings and writing IEP/504.
•Chairs some team meetings: eligibility determination: initial, re-evaluation meetings and annual reviews.
•Coordinates the scheduling of all annual reviews and reevaluations w/technology and clerical support
•Support transition of students back to school, supported classroom and general education classrooms (communication with teachers, support plans, etc)
•Other duties may be assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:
•Valid Massachusetts DESE Adjustment Counselor Licensure Master’s Degree in a mental health or related discipline
•Approved CORI and Fingerprinting results
