About Us
Brilliant® is an award-winning contract and consulting practice headquartered in Chicago, specializing in accounting, finance, technology, and business solutions across the Midwest and Southeast U.S. labor markets.
Job Description
We’re partnering with a ~$75M, rapidly growing, acquisition-driven organization that needs a hands-on Interim Controller to lead a critical finance transformation.
This is a true transformation role—not a steady-state Controller position. The company has scaled quickly through M&A and now needs a leader who can build structure, implement discipline, and elevate accounting to GAAP standards.
They specifically need a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Percentage of Completion (POC) accounting and job costing. This person must be able to own the function strategically while staying deep in the weeds operationally.
Essential Job Functions
- Own and build the month-end close process (currently underdeveloped)
- Lead conversion from cash basis to GAAP accounting
- Implement and standardize POC revenue recognition and job costing practices
- Partner closely with operations on project tracking, margins, and billing accuracy
- Clean up and manage G/L, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Establish processes, controls, and scalable reporting infrastructure
- Drive finance transformation initiatives across the business
- Support M&A integration, aligning accounting practices across entities
- Act as a hands-on leader—comfortable executing while building the long-term structure
What They Need (Non-Negotiable)
- Deep, hands-on expertise in POC accounting and job costing — must be able to implement, not just advise
- Proven experience in project-based environments (construction, engineering, field services, etc.)
- Track record of transforming or rebuilding accounting functions
- Strong experience with month-end close ownership and GAAP reporting
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, evolving, M&A-heavy environment
- Experience with QuickBooks or similar systems
What Makes You a Fit
- You’ve walked into unstructured environments and fixed them
- You can toggle between strategy and execution without hesitation
- You understand how to tie accounting to operational performance at the project level
- You’re comfortable being hands-on despite the Controller title
Why This Role
- High-visibility opportunity to lead a full finance transformation
- Direct impact on a $75M business in growth mode
- Significant exposure to executive leadership and M&A activity
- Opportunity to build something the right way rather than inherit a polished function
