What are the responsibilities and job description for the Learning & Development Manager position at Brightyard Programs?
A well-written activity plan only works when employees know how to use it. Our instructors need practical preparation: how to explain an activity, manage transitions, include different participants, and respond when something does not go as expected.
As our Learning & Development Manager, you will build and deliver training for instructors, site coordinators, and seasonal employees. You will turn program standards into useful workshops, practice scenarios, and reference materials, then follow up to see whether the learning is being applied.
This is an individual contributor position. You will coordinate experienced site colleagues who support training delivery.

Nice to Have
Experience preparing seasonal teams, training site supervisors, developing accessible learning materials, or coordinating multiple training locations.
Your Scope and Support
You will own training design, delivery planning, and evaluation. Site managers remain responsible for daily supervision and employee performance.
Safeguarding policies and specialist procedures are approved by the designated program leaders. You will help employees understand those requirements and coordinate qualified providers for training that requires specific credentials.
This role includes observing activities involving children but does not carry a regular teaching group or replace scheduled site staffing.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary range is $80,000–$90,000. Offers reflect relevant training experience, facilitation skills, and responsibility for organization-wide programs. Compensation is reviewed annually. No bonus or equity is included in this sample package.
- Healthcare: Medical, dental, and vision coverage from the first day of the month following hire. Brightyard pays 85% of employee premiums and 50% of dependent premiums.
- 401(k): Dollar-for-dollar company match on the first 4% of eligible pay contributed, available after 90 days. Employer contributions vest immediately.
- Paid leave: 20 vacation days accrued annually, 8 paid sick days, and 11 paid company holidays.
- Parental leave: 8 weeks of paid leave after 12 months of employment.
- Insurance: Company-paid basic life and short-term disability coverage.
- Equipment: Company laptop and required training software and materials.
- Travel: Approved business mileage, parking, and tolls reimbursed under the written company policy.
- Professional development: Up to $2,000 annually for approved courses, certifications, and conferences.
- Program discount: 30% off eligible Brightyard programs for dependent children, subject to age requirements and available places.
How We Work
We want employees to practice before they are expected to perform independently. Training sessions include time to try an approach, ask questions, and receive specific feedback.
You will work closely with site teams to understand what they encounter during a real afternoon or camp day. Their observations should influence the materials you create.
The busiest preparation periods fall before summer camps and the new school year. Up to six Saturday training days may be scheduled annually, with advance notice and an alternative weekday off. Occasional later weekday sessions are balanced by adjusted working hours. There is no overnight on-call rotation.
Your First 90 Days
- First month: Observe programs, review existing training, and meet site coordinators and program leaders.
- Second month: Refresh and deliver one onboarding module, gathering feedback from participants and supervisors.
- Third month: Present a prioritized training plan and a practical way to assess readiness for key responsibilities.
Success means employees can apply what they learn, managers have useful coaching tools, and training records remain accurate.
Hiring Process
- A 30-minute introductory call with the Director of People & Programs.
- A 60-minute interview including a short, live facilitation exercise using a fictional scenario supplied in advance.
- A 45-minute conversation with a site coordinator and a Program Development colleague.
No unpaid training delivery to actual employees or take-home course-development assignment is required. The process typically takes two to three weeks.
Eligibility and Application
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without employer visa sponsorship and able to work regularly in the Richmond area. Relocation assistance is not included.
Please submit an English-language résumé. An anonymized training sample is welcome but optional. Any offer is subject to role-appropriate background screening and reference checks, with candidate consent, before access to program sites.
Reasonable accommodations are available throughout the interview process.
