Job Summary

The Safety & Compliance Auditor is responsible for conducting comprehensive safety, health, safeguarding, and compliance audits across assigned centres. This field-based role provides objective oversight of practices and environments serving children from infancy through school age, helping ensure alignment with applicable regulatory requirements, organizational policies, and established safety standards.
Reporting to the Director of Safety, Compliance & Safeguarding, this role evaluates both physical environments and operational practices, identifies areas of risk and non-compliance, documents findings, and partners with centre and operational leadership to support timely corrective action. The role also contributes to broader organizational risk identification by ensuring audit findings are accurate, consistent, and actionable.
Success in this role requires strong knowledge of early childhood environments, excellent observational skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to balance independent oversight with a collaborative and solutions-focused approach.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Audit & Risk Assessment

  • Conduct scheduled and as-needed comprehensive safety, health, safeguarding and compliance audits across assigned early childhood education centres.
  • Evaluate classroom and facility conditions, staff practices, supervision, child accountability, safe sleep, feeding, medication management, emergency preparedness, playground and equipment safety, sanitation, food safety, transportation practices, physical security, and other areas of potential risk.
  • Observe daily practices and routines to assess actual implementation of safety and compliance expectations, rather than relying solely on documentation or self-reported practices.
  • Identify and accurately classify audit findings based on established risk levels, including conditions requiring immediate correction or escalation.
  • Document findings clearly, objectively, and thoroughly, including supporting observations, photographs, records, or other evidence as appropriate.
  • Communicate critical or high-risk findings immediately through established escalation protocols.
  • Review corrective action and supporting documentation to verify identified concerns have been appropriately addressed.
  • Conduct follow-up visits or validation activities when necessary to confirm sustained correction.
  • Maintain consistency in application of audit standards through ongoing calibration, training, and collaboration with Director of Safety, Compliance and Safeguarding and fellow auditors.
  • Complete assigned audits and required documentation accurately within established timelines.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight

  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable childcare licensing requirements, health and safety regulations, and organizational policies within assigned jurisdictions.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and communicate potential changes or risks to the Director of Safety, Compliance & Safeguarding.
  • Support the collection and maintenance of accurate compliance and audit data for reporting and trend analysis.
  • Partner with Operations to clarify findings and expectations while maintaining appropriate independence in the audit process.
  • Escalate significant concerns or unresolved corrective actions according to established protocols.

Safeguarding & Child Protection B

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of organizational safeguarding and child protection policies, mandatory reporting requirements, and applicable regulatory expectations.
  • Remain alert to conditions, behaviors, practices, or environmental factors that may present a safeguarding concern or increased risk to children.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional discretion when handling sensitive safeguarding information.
  • Support a culture in which child safety and well-being remain the primary consideration in decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field preferred.
  • 2 years in early childhood education, licensing, operations, auditing, or related field required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and progressively responsible experience may be considered in lieu of formal education requirements.
  • Working knowledge of childcare licensing, health and safety requirements, incident management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience conducting inspections, audits, observations with strong observational, organizational, written communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage an assigned market, and meet established audit and follow-up timelines.
  • Proficiency with standard technology, electronic documentation, and data-entry systems.

What Success Looks Like

  • Model a visible and consistent commitment to child safety, safeguarding, health, and regulatory compliance.
  • Build trust through consistency and follow-through.
  • Maintain appropriate independence while building collaborative relationships with centre and operational leadership.
  • Communicate difficult messages respectfully and constructively.
  • Remain calm and exercises sound judgment during urgent, sensitive, or high-risk situations.
  • Supports continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to strengthen systems and prevent recurrence, not simply correct individual findings.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight travel where required.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and move in a variety of environments for an extended period while conducting center audits and observations.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to respond to urgent safety or compliance needs and adjust travel schedules when necessary.
  • Must be able to meet applicable background screening.
