What are the responsibilities and job description for the Workforce Development Manager position at Brighton Tru-Edge?
About Brighton Tru-Edge:
We have been making things out of metal in Cincinnati since 1914, when our founder hung out a sign reading "Practical Coppersmith" and started building copper kettles by hand. Four generations later we are the largest cold-form tank head manufacturer in North America, and part of the largest tank head group in the world. Our heads go into pressure vessels for the chemical, clean energy, cryogenic, food and beverage, and oil and gas industries, for roughly 800 customers a year.
We are growing, and our limit is not orders or equipment. It is people. We need someone whose entire job is finding them, developing them, and keeping them.
About the Role:
You will own how skilled people get into this building, how they get good once they are here, and how the people already here keep getting better. That means opening up new sources of talent rather than waiting on job board applicants, taking our structured training and evaluation program from draft to finished and making it yours, extending it across every production role, developing the trainers who do the teaching, and lifting the productivity of operators who have been here for years.
You will also be the on-site point of contact for employees with questions about their benefits, their paycheck, or their leave, working alongside our corporate HR team to get them answers quickly. This is a shop floor job with an office, not an office job that visits the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety and Quality: Uphold the highest standards of safety and quality in all activities.
- Sourcing: Build and hold relationships with career centers and trade schools, community colleges, agricultural and FFA programs in the surrounding counties, community organizations, veteran transition programs, and regional workforce partners across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Reduce dependence on job boards to a minority of hires.
- Selection: Administer the pre hire practical assessment on every production candidate, own the scoring key, and recalibrate the cut score against later performance.
- Training: Take the drafted training and evaluation program from draft to finished, reissue it under their own name, then run it end to end. Schedule and administer every checkpoint against hours worked and ensure none is missed.
- Workforce Development: Assess the current workforce against the skills matrix, identify where output is lost to skill gaps rather than equipment or scheduling, and build targeted training to close them.
- Employee Support: Serve as the on site first point of contact for hourly employees on benefits, payroll, leave, and policy questions, routing to corporate HR as needed and following through to resolution.
Line-Item Responsibilities:
- Extend the training and evaluation program beyond flanging to press and every other production role, so there is one consistent standard across the plant.
- Select, brief, and develop the skilled operators who serve as trainers, and administer the trainer bonus.
- Write and follow through on remediation plans for employees who miss a checkpoint or are struggling in the role.
- Maintain the skills matrix connecting demonstrated ability to wage progression.
- Stand up a pre hire cohort class with a local career center so foundational skills are learned before the probationary clock starts.
- Own onboarding, thirty and ninety day check ins, exit conversations, and reporting on why employees leave.
- Represent Brighton at career fairs, county fairs, school events, and community partner events, including some evenings and weekends.
- Travel expectations are local to Greater Cincinnati. This is not a long distance travel role
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated comfort in a manufacturing environment, having worked in, supervised, trained in, or taught for a plant or a skilled trade.
- Experience recruiting, training, or developing hourly production or skilled trades employees.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with outside institutions and partners.
- Working knowledge of benefits, payroll, and leave sufficient to answer straightforward employee questions correctly and to recognize when a question needs to be escalated.
- Experience in a union represented facility preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish and English strongly preferred. A meaningful share of the workforce and the candidate pool speaks Spanish, and this role delivers training and employeesupport to both. This qualification carries additional compensation.
- Existing relationships with career centers, trade schools, or workforce development organizations in Greater Cincinnati preferred.
- 4-year college degree, preferred.
Behavioral Qualities:
- Organization, straightforwardness, discretion, self direction, credibility with skilled trades employees, and the persistence to build outside relationships that do not produce results immediately
