Position Summary

Brighton Park Neighborhood Council is seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor to inspire and empower adult learners through engaging instruction. In this role, you will develop and deliver comprehensive ASL lessons, foster a supportive learning environment, and promote effective communication skills. Many participants are preparing for careers as paraprofessionals, teacher assistants, and other school-based positions where ASL can support communication with students who have hearing loss, autism, developmental disabilities, or other communication needs.

This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact by teaching a vital language that fosters inclusion and connection.

  • This is a part-time temporary position. Availability on Tuesdays from 5 pm to 7 pm for 7 weeks starting in September through mid October.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement engaging, beginner-level ASL curricula tailored to adults and diverse learners
  • Prepare structured lesson plans, instructional materials, and supplementary resources for classroom activities
  • Conduct in-person lessons teaching basic ASL vocabulary, conversational skills, and setting-specific communication strategies
  • Foster active participation and confidence-building through practical exercises and interactive learning techniques
  • Track participant attendance and assess student progress regularly to adapt teaching strategies accordingly
  • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that promotes cultural awareness and student interaction
  • Provide guidance on effective communication techniques for working with individuals with hearing impairments
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress reports, and instructional materials used

Qualifications

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly
  • Proven experience teaching ASL to adults or children, including classroom management and materials development
  • Background working in educational or community settings, with a preference for adult learning environments
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support diverse learning styles and foster collaboration
  • Strong commitment to creating an inclusive, positive environment that supports individual learning needs
  • Valuable experience or familiarity in instructing foreign languages or sign language in diverse settings is preferred

Pay: $30.00 per hour
