Job Summary
ED: The Unit Service Technician provides a broad range of care and services to patients, including but not to limited to EKG, phlebotomy, equipment cleaning, and stocking of rooms under the supervision of a licensed nurse. They perform a wide range of secretarial duties, including but not limited to organizing paperwork, answering the phone, paging, and receiving of Emergency Department patients into the medi-tech computer system. They will provide safe accurate transportation of patients throughout the hospital. They will perform 1:1 sitting when necessary. The Unit Service Technician of the Emergency Department will also assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice.

Essential Functions
- PROVISION OF SAFE ENVIRONMENT
- Utilizes proper body mechanics in moving and assisting patients to prevent personal injury.
- Follows and maintains restraint policies under supervision of licensed nurse. Checks with nurse for order before utilizing any restraints.
- Applies restraints under the direction of the provider, in accordance with hospital policy and assures for the availability and reliability of those restraints.
- Conducts or assures cleaning of medical equipment and clinical environment routinely and between patient use to prevent nosocomial infection.
- PERFORMS SECRETARIAL DUTIES TO ENSURE EFFICIENT OPERATION OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.
- Answers patient call lights, telephone and screen calls in a pleasant and courteous manner, relaying accurate messages to appropriate personal, as observed or reported by staff and callers.
- Receives visitors to the department in a professional manner, projecting a positive public image.
- Copies patient’s charts and other materials as requested by staff.
- Provides secretarial support in order to ensure efficient and confidential flow of information for patient's medical records.
- Requests and maintains old medical records as needed.
- Pages for providers as necessary.
- Copying of medical records to prepare for transfer.
- Provides secretarial assistance to the Medical Director or Attending Physician as necessary and as time allows.
- Delivers specimens to the laboratory as needed such as in a Code Blue situation as requested by staff.
- Arranges ambulance transfer in the absence of the department secretary.
- PERFORMS ASSIGNED PATIENT TRANSPORTATION TO ENSURE PATIENTS RECEIVE ALL TESTING PROCEDURES ORDERED IN A TO TIMELY MANNER. ENSURES THAT PATIENT SAFETY IS NEVER COMPROMISED DURING TRANSPORT.
- Stretcher is cleaned after every transport with an antibacterial as provided in the department.
- Performs the transportation of the deceased to the morgue in a respectful manner. Always uses proper morgue stretcher and is accompanied by a second escort.
- Follows proper department procedures concerning the handling of all specimens during transport.
- Strictly practices Standard Precautions. Checks with nursing staff for specific instructions if necessary.
- Assists nursing in transport of critical patients as necessary.
- PERFORMS TECHNICAL DUTIES INCLUDING EKG, PHLEBOTOMY UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A LICENSED NURSE.
- Adheres to laboratory policy and procedure when retrieving lab specimens including the proper labeling of all specimens.
- Performs EKGs as requested by nursing/provider and obtains old EKGs in MUSE system.
- EKG’S and brought to provider for immediate review upon completion.
- Obtains lab specimens as requested by nursing/provider.
- Obtains labs for in-house draws on 11p-7a shift for 1am and 4am rounds, in accordance with lab policy.
- Assist providers with patient procedures as needed.
- Responsible for cleaning and restocking of glidescope.
- Notification of need for repair of medical equipment to appropriate parties.
- Stocking of rooms in accordance with assignment on each shift.
- Emptying of linen bags when half full to prevent injury.
