Institutional Advisor

BridgeValley Community and Technical College invites applications for an Institutional Advisor. This is a professional-level position responsible for facilitating the application and admission of students into higher education. Job responsibilities require the ability to develop and evaluate alternatives for possible courses of action. Work is performed under immediate supervision, working within guidelines and established standards. Problems faced in this position are highly varied, complex, and often non-recurring, which may require novel and creative approaches to resolution. Decisions have major implications on the management and operations of an area within a department, and may contribute to important strategies, operations, and business decisions that affect the department. This position serves as a member of the Department of Student Services team and guides retention efforts and best practices to faculty, staff, and administration.

This position is based in South Charleston with occasional travel to the Montgomery campus as needed. This position is a non-classified position, exempt from overtime, and benefits eligible. This is a grant-funded position.

• Support students to transition successfully to BridgeValley 
• Provide academic advising consistent with the college-wide advising model to first-time students
• Serves as a Professional Advisor within Student Services to incoming students and provides onboarding information to ensure student success
• Provide information about campus and community resources to assist students in achieving personal, educational, and career goals
• Staff all orientation, open house, and open registration events by being an active team member to support student onboarding and success
• Assist with the Early Alert Management System
• Collaborate with faculty, program chairs, and academic deans in other departments regarding academic advising and early intervention for at-risk students
• Assist students who are undecided when applying with career exploration/assessment options
• Develop and present workshops on student success strategies to students, including teaching GNST courses 
• Serve on at least one college-wide strategic plan committee and on ad hoc committees related to student success as needed
• Advise at least one student organization, including mentoring students, supporting positive and appropriate community engagement, and modeling professional behaviors to help develop students through their student organization involvement
• Other duties as assigned

• Bachelor's Degree with a preference in Counseling, Leadership, Education, or related field OR Associate’s degree with 5 years of experience

• Higher education experience or related experience (preference in a community college) Strong Computer Skills Customer service experience

• Ability to work as an effective team member

• Strong time management, organizational, and critical thinking skills Preferred:

• Experience with Banner, D2L BrightSpace, Microsoft Office Products Attention to detail and accuracy Strong understanding of first-generation students and challenges they face in achieving success
