The Respiratory Therapist provides quality patient care by delivering intensive respiratory care and coordinating patient transport in and out of the facility as medically prescribed. This role requires minimal supervision while ensuring compliance with the professional scope of practice. The therapist evaluates patients and recommends treatment plans, educates patients on treatments, and provides critical care through various respiratory procedures.
Responsibilities
- Conduct physician-prescribed respiratory treatments using both invasive and non-invasive ventilatory equipment.
- Administer medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation while operating various devices including oxygen, aerosol, and nebulizer systems.
- Perform chest physiotherapy and suctioning using different methods (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal).
- Monitor oximetry and capnography as per established policies.
- Review patient chest x-rays and perform 12-lead EKGs along with basic arrhythmia recognition.
- Conduct pulmonary function studies and assist in respiratory-related procedures such as bronchoscopy and chest tube placements.
- Provide tracheostomy care, including tube insertion and removal.
- Perform arterial punctures and monitor ventilation efficiency.
- Document all treatments, patient responses, and communicate effectively with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding therapy efficiency.
- Maintain accurate records, charge for services, and assist with equipment maintenance as needed.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- Valid Respiratory Therapist license.
- Experience in intensive respiratory care preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required.
