We are seeking an experienced Pipelayer Foreman to lead underground utility and pipe installation work in tight, high-risk urban jobsite conditions. This role is ideal for someone who has strong field leadership experience and can personally lay pipe while directing a crew in small, confined work zones, especially in downtown or developed areas with existing utilities, sidewalks, roadways, homes, and limited access.
The right candidate must be highly skilled in reading site conditions, maintaining line and grade, working safely around existing infrastructure, and keeping production moving in difficult environments where precision matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and work alongside field crews performing pipe installation for civil and utility projects
- Lay pipe in tight or congested areas, including sidewalks, narrow corridors, residential edges, and areas between existing utilities and structures
- Interpret plans, utility markings, grades, elevations, and specifications
- Coordinate daily field activities with superintendents, operators, laborers, and subcontractors
- Ensure proper trench safety, shoring, bedding, backfill, and compaction practices
- Safely expose and work around existing utilities, structures, and other obstructions
- Maintain quality control for alignment, slope, grade, and tie-ins
- Identify field conflicts early and communicate solutions before delays occur
- Manage crew productivity, jobsite cleanliness, safety, and workflow
- Perform hands-on pipe work as needed, not just supervision
- Ensure all work is completed in compliance with project plans, safety requirements, and municipal or utility standards
Required Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in underground utility, civil, or pipe installation work
- Prior experience as a Foreman or lead pipelayer
- Strong hands-on experience laying pipe in tight urban or residential work zones
- Ability to work around existing underground utilities, structures, sidewalks, and limited-access excavations
- Experience with storm, sewer, water, or utility pipe installation
- Ability to read plans, grades, stakes, and utility layouts
- Strong understanding of trench safety and underground construction safety practices
- Proven leadership ability in the field with a working, hands-on management style
- Ability to coordinate with operators and crew members in high-precision environments
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with municipal, DOT, streetscape, or downtown utility projects
- OSHA certification
- Experience with laser levels, grade checking, and layout interpretation
- CDL or equipment knowledge is a plus
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Strong enough technically to personally handle difficult pipe runs
- Calm and sharp in tight, high-pressure field conditions
- Understands how to work carefully without slowing production unnecessarily
- Can lead a crew while staying hands-on
- Knows how to protect existing utilities, nearby homes, sidewalks, and finished surfaces
- Takes pride in precision, safety, and clean execution
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and work in trenches and confined work areas
- Ability to lift up to [50–75] pounds as needed
