Utility Clerk - 40 hrs. per wk.
Department: Operations
Reports To: Store Operations Manager
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Level: $19.00 - 27.00/hr.
Summary: This position is responsible for assisting in maintaining safe, organized and efficient store operations by coordinating and communicating with all departments. Emphasis is on providing excellent customer service, retail floor presence and warehouse support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following: Other duties as assigned.
Customer Service –
- Treat customers in a prompt and friendly manner
- Assist customers and answer their questions, respond to their needs and requests
- Provide Front End assistance, including but not limited to: bagging groceries, helping customers out and shopping cart retrieval.
- Cashier
Store Operations –
- Communicate daily with department managers to gain a full understanding of the needs of the store
- Prioritize the work load of the store and attend to the most pressing concerns
- Cover breaks of and fill in for other department’s staff
- Stock product, front and face items, and retrieve special orders
- Maintain cleanliness of the store
- Be the first responder to spills and other safety hazards
- Process cardboard out of the warehouse
- Safely use the baler for cardboard and other recyclables
- Attend all Front End department and full staff meetings
Work Environment –
- Work in a positive, cooperative and friendly manner with other employees
- Arrive to work on time and complete shifts
- Know product locations in store, perform price checks on request
- Perform related duties as required
Responsibilities to Safety:
- Protect the safety of self, co-worker’s, and BriarPatch Co-op patrons at all times.
- Report any potentially harmful equipment or situations to the immediate supervisor without delay.
- Report safety-related accidents and incidents at once to supervisor.
- Follow all company and safety policies and procedures.
- Operate equipment in a safe manner that will not lead to injury of self or others, nor damage equipment.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED certificate preferred; previous cashiering/cash handling experience preferred along with customer service experience.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively with customers or employees.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or electronic form.
- Computer Skills:
- An individual should have knowledge of:
- Internet software
- Inventory software
- Order processing systems
- Spreadsheet software and
- Word Processing software.
