Position Summary:
The Histology Technologist/ MOHs Tech will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing and preparing patient tissues specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the diagnosing pathologist or laboratory director. This includes logging, batching, cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received are sorted, logged and prioritized according to the standards required. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, works efficiently under time constraints, and upholds high standards for laboratory quality and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Receive, accession, and label tissue specimens accurately.
  • Process tissue specimens using proper fixation and dehydration techniques.
  • Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing. Impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides.
  • Operates and maintains all histology lab equipment in a proper state of readiness and cleanliness.
  • Cover slip slides and ensure they are properly labeled and organized for the pathologist’s review.
  • Records number of tissue cases, blocks and slides.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot histology equipment and instruments.
  • Monitor inventory and restock supplies as needed.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain accurate logs and documentation according to regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate with dermatology providers and support staff to ensure timely and accurate pathology workflow.
  • Coordinates daily workflow of tasks and activities in the pathology area with regard to routing procedures and special procedures for the patient tissue specimens.
  • Relied upon to report to work as scheduled, to carry out instructions and fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Accepts accountability for actions and can adjust work shift when workload or conditions warrant it.
  • Promote an environment in which the laboratory staff can work together cooperatively toward objectives.
  • Observes confidentiality, both with patient information and with coworkers.
Mohs Technician:
  • Prepare frozen sections slides for Mohs Micropgraphic Surgery according tot he polices, procedures, and guidelines specified in the laboraory manual.
  • Maintain the Mohs laboratory: Monitor supplies and reorder when necessary, Clean and maintain cryostat and Clean and maintain all lab areas.
  • Maintain all microtome knives, sending them out for sharpening and reconditioning when necessary.
  • Update and maintain all current laboratory manuals as per C.L.I.A. and other governing agencies.
  • Record and maintain all patient information and slide storage as per directionsin the Mohs Laboratory Manual.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an a NAACLS -accredited histotechnology program.
  • Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP preferred.
  • Must have a Florida Histology Technologist or Technician license.
  • Previous experience in a dermatopathology or clinical histology lab setting preferred.
  • Proficient in tissue processing, microtomy, staining, and laboratory procedures.
  • Color discrimination required to verify diagnostic quality of staining processes in order that essential features of the tissue sections can be properly defined.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate the micro-thin tissue sections and to mout onto microscope slides.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions:
  • Laboratory environment; exposure to biohazards and chemical agents.
  • Standing, bending, and lifting required during specimen processing.
  • May involve use of sharp instruments and exposure to formalin.
  • Part-Time Position
