Summary
The Head Electrician is responsible for the hanging, mounting, rigging, circuiting, programming and execution of lighting for Janiec Opera Company productions, Orchestra and Chamber Events, Special Events and Special Projects. The Head Electrician works on a crew of an assistant electrician, staff electricians and lighting apprentices, and oversees their progress. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the lighting equipment and supplies as directed. A solid knowledge of crew organization, scheduling, all aspects of lighting and electricity is necessary in this position.
Holistic effective communication and dissemination of information as well as a love of music and a sense of humor when appropriate is essential to the successful execution of this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Hang, circuit, focus, programe, maintain, and strike all lighting for the opera/musical season, the orchestral season, and Special Events.
- Maintain safe, instructive, professional and productive workspaces.
- Work as both a supervisor and a crew member at work calls if needed – this includes hanging, focusing and programming lights.
- Assist the Director of Production/Assistant Production Managers to ensure that EVERY concert or event that needs an LD and/or Board Op receives one in a timely manner.
- As assigned, facilitate the repair of equipment and maintain accurate equipment inventories.
- As directed, maintain accurate and thorough paperwork which includes but is not limited to tracking equipment ownership, current location, maintenance needs etc.
- Manage directly or supervise the training and education of each lighting staff member in proper safety procedures in conjunction with Production Management.
- Ensure excellence and professionalism in all 6 performance venues and over 80 performances.
- Oversee Staff Electricians, Apprentices, Production Assistants, and work-studies in the workspaces.
- Attend and oversee all load-ins and outs of productions as directed by Production Management
- Run or assist in the run of overnight crews as needed.
- Run shows as required.
- Be prepared to assist other crews/departments at the end of season strike until dismissed by Production Management.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Supervised by the Director of Production.
