What are the responsibilities and job description for the Van Driver position at Brevard Alzheimers Foundation?
- Responsible for the safety and well-being of passengers being transported.
- Perform a comprehensive written inspection of the van daily, reporting any conditions of concern to the maintenance coordinator, before transporting passengers.
- Ability to follow through on scheduled routing and read a street map.
- Ensure van is always fueled and ready for use.
- Comply with efficient and safe van routes ensuring passengers trips are not longer than necessary.
- Follow road and safety regulations.
- Report any traffic violations to the Transportation Lead immediately.
- Ensure all passengers are in safety restraints at all times during transportation.
- Follow van safety procedures when loading and unloading.
- Make certain no passenger is left alone on van without adult supervision at any time, including passengers final drop off at the end of the van route.
- Check that passengers who are visibly sick or complaining of feeling sick remain with their family.
- Inform designated staff about passengers who will be absent for the day.
- Follow van cleaning procedures.
- Routinely inventories, van emergency first aid supplies and equipment, report needs to the Transportation Lead or delegated staff person.
- Identify people authorized by caregivers to receive the passengers in order to drop off only to the authorized people.
- Evacuate passengers according to written and practiced procedures in case of an accident/emergency.
- Physical ability to perform job, including operating wheelchair lift and pull/push or move 250 lbs in a wheelchair. May have to assist transferring participants from wheelchair to van seat and back to wheelchair.
- Report to delegated nurse the need of medical assistance in case of an emergency, as well as completing a written accident report as required.
- Attend and participate in driver's meetings and in-service training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SAFE RIDE
- Communicate with program director of any changes in client appointments or status of client.
MOBILE PANTRY
- Safely and efficiently deliver food boxes/bags to client's address.
- Communicate with program director of any changes in route scheduled or status of food clients.
Ensure food boxes/bags are in good condition before delivery. Never leave perishable food in van for extended periods of time. Use freezer blanket for perishable items.
High School graduate or GED required.
- Must pass Level 2 background screening and drug testing prior to hire.
- Must have one year experience driving a VAN with a capacity of 14 people and no less than 10 year driving experience.
- Valid Florida State driver's license with no moving violations or accidents in the past three years required.
- Must be at least 25 years of age for insurance purposes.
- A minimum of one year professional driving experience preferred.
- Must maintain insurability through agency's carrier.
- Must successfully complete all training classes as required.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to work cooperatively with other staff and passengers/caregivers.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Ability to accept and follow instructions.
- Ability to work with challenging behaviors expressed by participants (i.e., verbal and physical aggression, wandering, etc).
- Ability to demonstrate good judgment
- Ability to communicate clearly in English.
- Experience working with frail and disabled people preferred.
- Must have a friendly disposition and caring attitude toward senior citizens.
