THE COMMUNITY/DISTRICT The Bret Harte Union High School District serves secondary students in the community of historic Angels Camp, home of "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and also serves the Corridor 4 communities from Copperopolis to Bear Valley. The school is served by State Highway 49 running north and south and Highway 4 running east and west. Bret Harte Union High School, established in 1905, celebrated its 100th year of operation in 2005. Commuter traffic to Stockton, Modesto, and the Bay Area increases each year. The District is void of large shopping centers and national chain stores. The residential growth within the District has slowed in recent years. The Bret Harte Union High School District provides a quality educational program for more than 600 students (approximately 33 in Alternative Education) in grades 9-12 at one school site. It is a basic aid district with an annual operating budget of a little over $15,000,000. The District is committed to quality education, providing modern facilities and a wide variety of academic and co-curricular offerings. The District has an excellent staff of teachers, administrators and classified personnel - all of whom are very student-oriented. There is strong parent and community support. The Bret Harte Campus is one of two schools in the District: Bret Harte Union High School, a traditional comprehensive and independent study high school and Vallecito High School, a continuation high school. Transportation is provided for approximately 30 percent of the students each day. Up country students travel up to 32 miles one way and students down the hill travel up to 25 miles daily one way. Bret Harte Union High School firmly believes that there must be involvement between the school, the district staff, parents and community members. Only by working together can a strong educational program be created which enables students to look forward to the challenge of the future. Students must be prepared intellectually, technically, and socially for the world of work, advanced vocational training, and/or higher education. SCHOOL FACILITIES AND SAFETY During a WASC Parent Survey, most parents indicated Bret Harte High is “safe, a good place to learn and a pleasant place to be.” To safeguard the well-being of students and staff, a Comprehensive School Safety Plan has been developed by the Safety Committee, which meets regularly and consists of teachers, parents, administrators and local law enforcement. The facilities cover 20 acres of land, with 44 academic classrooms including a two-story classroom with 4 State of the Art Science classrooms and 5 standard classrooms, one computer lab, a laptop cart in every classroom, an agriculture shop, greenhouse, and an agriculture science center, a home economics laboratory, a woodshop, auto shop and electronics area, a learning and career center, a music facility with piano lab and practice rooms, a performing arts theater, a multi-purpose room, two gymnasiums with shower facilities, a football field, two baseball fields, and an all-weather track. A joint-use sports complex is located on land adjacent to the campus and includes an aquatic center, outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, classroom/restroom facility and student parking. The Governing Board prohibits district employees from discriminating against or harassing any other district employee or job applicant on the basis of the employee's actual or perceived race, color, ancestry, national origin, age, religious creed, marital status, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, military and veteran status, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics.
