Job Overview:
The Construction/Project Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for commercial and industrial general construction projects. Position focused on projects with conveyor systems and metal fabrication in manufacturing environment/facilities. This role works closely with engineering, project management, fabrication, and field operations to develop complete, buildable, and profitable bids
Key Responsibilities:
Estimating & Preconstruction
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for: -Conveyor systems (mechanical, structural, supports, guarding, installation -Industrial construction and facility modifications -Structural steel and custom metal fabrication
- Review drawings, specifications, RFQs, and site conditions to define project scope
- Perform quantity takeoffs for steel, plate, pipe, conveyors, components, and hardware
- Develop labor estimates for: Shop Fabrication, Field installation, Mechanical and Structural work
- Solicit, evaluate, and level vendor and subcontractor pricing
- Identify scope gaps, risks, and constructability concerns and propose solutions
Design & Engineering Coordination
- Collaborate with in-house engineers and designers during conceptual and detailed design phases
- Assist with design-build and design-assist pricing
- Evaluate alternative materials, fabrication methods, and installation approaches to optimize cost and schedule
Fabrication & Field Costing
- Work closely with the metal fabrication shop to: -Understand shop capabilities, capacities, and efficiencies -Coordinate with shop leaders/supervision to determine labor hours and material costs
- Coordinate with field supervision to validate installation means and methods
- Incorporate equipment, rigging, lifts, and specialty tools into estimates
Proposal & Bid Management
- Prepare complete bid packages, including: Pricing breakdowns ,Clarifications and exclusions, Value engineering options
- Participate in bid reviews and handoff meetings with project management
- Support change order pricing during project execution as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years of estimating experience in; Industrial construction, mechanical systems, conveyors, or steel fabrication
- Strong understanding of: Structural steel and metal fabrication, Conveyor systems and industrial material handling, Construction means and methods
- Ability to read and interpret: Engineering drawings, structural and mechanical plans, specifications and schedules
- Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and takeoff tools
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, business management or a related field
- 10 years of estimating experience in; Industrial construction, mechanical systems, conveyors, or steel fabrication
- Experience with design-build or design-assist projects
- Background in metal fabrication or mechanical contracting
- Knowledge of manufacturing or distribution facility environments
- Familiarity with: AutoCAD / SolidWorks (for review, not drafting), ERP or job cost systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Viewpoint, etc.)
