PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS: Brenau University will conduct criminal background checks on all persons being considered for initial employment. In some circumstances, an FBI fingerprint report may be necessary to satisfy the requirement. Once employed, employees must hold and continue to maintain a favorable criminal history background. Random background checks are performed. Credit checks may be performed on candidates/employees who are selected for a position that regularly engages in handling credit cards or other company monies. A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) may be performed during the hiring process, or as part of a random check. MVR checks are required to meet insurance requirements for those employees operating a university vehicle or participating in any driving activity on behalf of Brenau University, (including operating a golf cart, rented vehicle or one’s personal vehicle). Employees who travel must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Georgia driver’s license, and good driving record. All employees who operate university vehicles, who are employed in a sensitive position, or who travel regularly as part of their job responsibilities may be subject to post-hire drug screening and random drug-screening. All employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug screening..

Position Summary:  

Faculty member responsible for student advising and teaching upper extremity content to entry-level occupational therapy graduate students across programs; participate in professional service and scholarship.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy or a related field and awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional accrediting body; PhD preferred.
  • Licensed occupational therapist with modalities in the state of Georgia, or eligible for licensure
  • 5 years of occupational therapy practice experience in outpatient upper extremity rehabilitation including advanced orthotics skills; Certified Hand Therapist preferred 
  • Current member of the American Occupational Therapy Association 

Responsibilities: 

TEACHING

  • MSOT Core Faculty teaching graduate courses in the occupational therapy (OT) education programs on the Norcross and Gainesville campuses as assigned (25 credits in physical rehabilitation courses/clinical content) including evening and weekend hours at least one semester per academic year.
  • Communicates and posts regular work and office hours; responds to student, faculty, staff, and administrative emails in a timely manner.
  • Works collaboratively with the OT Site Coordinator and SOT Director to ensure the course delivery aligns with the curriculum and meets the accreditation B standards, including:
  • Prepares syllabi following the respective master course syllabus.
  • Participates in text selection or other teaching modalities.
  • Prepares lectures, learning activities, assignments, and student evaluation using appropriate using applicable technology including the online learning platform (Canvas), virtual meetings, and other technologies.
  • Instructs and supervise students in clinical experiences and lab classes as assigned.
  • Critiques student assignments and provide prompt feedback.
  • Evaluates student performance in didactic courses and clinical simulation using formative and summative examinations. 
  • Regularly assesses student progress in courses; communicate with students’ faculty advisors of any “at-risk” students in a timely manner and follows the procedure for formally notifying the SOT Director and Site Coordinator. 
  • Prepares and submits final grades according to the Registrar’s Office procedures and timelines.
  • Conducts course evaluations and other evaluations in accordance with University policy.
  • Engages in formative and summative program evaluation to enhance student learning outcomes and strengthen the curriculum.
  • Assists with student tutorial/remediation sessions. 
  • Advises MSOT students as assigned.
  • Meets with advisees a minimum of once during each semester of the program.
  • Regularly reviews the student’s performance and assess the student’s readiness for the next phase of the program. 
  • Provides opportunities for the students to verbalize progress to date. 
  • Provides opportunities for the students to discuss adjustment processes and approaches to meeting the expectations of the program. 
  • Meets with any student who has performed unsatisfactorily either academically or professionally. 
  • Refers students to Student Services as needed for academic support and/or emotional support.
  • Discusses with the SOT Director any student issues regarding an advisee’s inability to successfully progress through the program.
  • Maintains an active presence on campus and informs the OT Site Coordinator of schedule changes; attends SOT, Ivester College of Health Sciences (ICHS), and University meetings, retreats, and major events.

SERVICE

  • Participates in the development, revision, and annual updating of SOT mission statements and MSOT program and curricular materials.
  • Participates in student admissions and interviewing processes for OT education programs.
  • Actively participates in a SOT workgroup or committee.
  • Serves as a representative of the SOT within the University through committee service, as assigned, and assist in the establishment of collegial relationships with other staff, faculty and administrators.
  • Represents the University to the community in a professional and positive way through volunteer service, participation in community events, and professional affiliations.
  • Maintains a strong and visible presence in local, state, national, and international professional activities. 
  • Assumes other duties within the SOT when needed and feasible. 

SCHOLARSHIP

  • Participates in research and/or professional development activities aligned with the mission of the SOT, ICHS, and the University.
  • Develops and submits one scholarly product per year—manuscript, poster or presentation, continuing education session—at the local, state, national, or international level
  • Actively promotes and supports scholarship among students including membership on student thesis/capstone committees.

Work Hours:

28 hours per week. Hours may be extended to meet the needs of the department.  

Environmental and Working Conditions/ Physical Demands and Aptitudes:

Mostly Sedentary work. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment related to teaching. Prolonged periods sitting and standing. Worker is required to have close visual acuity to grade papers, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
