Licensed Mental Health or Substance Use Counselor

Position Summary

The Licensed Mental Health or Substance Use Counselor provides clinical counseling services within a residential treatment setting for individuals experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This position facilitates individual and group counseling sessions, completes clinical documentation, participates in treatment planning, and supports residents throughout the recovery process.

This position may be full-time or part-time and works collaboratively with the clinical and residential treatment teams to ensure quality, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Maine licensure or certification in good standing, including but not limited to LADC, LCPC, LCSW, or other approved behavioral health licensure recognized under Maine regulations
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders, mental health treatment, trauma-informed care, and recovery principles
  • Understanding of ASAM Criteria and Maine licensing requirements preferred
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
  • Strong communication, clinical, and documentation skills
  • Experience in residential treatment or behavioral health preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Counseling Services

  • Facilitate individual, psychoeducational, and process group counseling sessions
  • Provide counseling and support to residents experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders
  • Assist residents in developing coping skills, relapse prevention strategies, and recovery goals
  • Participate in crisis intervention and emotional support as needed
  • Encourage resident participation and engagement in treatment programming

Documentation and Treatment Planning

  • Complete clinical documentation in accordance with Maine regulations, MaineCare standards, ASAM guidelines, and agency policy
  • Develop and maintain treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other required clinical records
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and professional documentation
  • Participate in case reviews and interdisciplinary treatment planning

Compliance and Professional Standards

  • Follow all Maine DHHS licensing regulations and applicable ASAM standards
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times
  • Adhere to agency policies, procedures, and code of conduct
  • Maintain all required licensure, certifications, and continuing education requirements

Team Collaboration

  • Collaborate with clinical, medical, residential, and administrative staff to support resident care
  • Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and trainings as required
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, respectful, and recovery-oriented treatment environment

Employment Status

Full-Time or Part-Time

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a residential treatment environment
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and facilitate groups
  • Ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations

Pay: $42,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
