Bread for the World is a Christian advocacy organization urging U.S. decision makers to do all they can to pursue a world without hunger. Our mission is to educate and equip people to advocate for policies and programs that can help end hunger in the U.S. and around the world. The Karen Sue Smith and Rose DiMartino Internship Program at Bread for the World enables you to contribute your efforts to this mission while benefiting from opportunities for supervised learning, personal development, and gain work experience.

DEPARTMENT:   Development and Membership

REPORTS TO:    Deputy Director of Data, Information Systems and Development Operations 

SEMESTER:        Summer (June - August 2026)

SCHEDULE:        Part Time: up to 30 hours per week

PRIMARY PURPOSE:   As the Development Operations Intern, you will support the Deputy Director of Data, Information Systems and Development Operations and the Senior Manager of Data, Insights, and Information Systems. You will gain experience analyzing real-world data on hunger and food insecurity in the United States. The primary focus will be on using Tableau to visualize the data in an easily understandable and actionable manner, maintain data hygiene and data integrity. Primary responsibilities for this role will include a combination of the following:

  • Find and gather publicly available data sets
  • Clean, transform, and aggregate the data to support analysis and reporting
  • Assist with developing interactive visualizations and dashboards
  • Use Tableau to present data in clear, actionable formats
  • Assist with ongoing data hygiene and ensure strong data integrity practices
  • Help develop, document, and maintain data processes and procedures
  • Participate in the Data Governance Committee and contribute to data standards and best practices
  • Incorporate user feedback to improve data clarity, usability, and overall user experience
  • Participate in department meetings
  • Work on additional projects as requested 

The intern will learn holistic data science skills in a nonprofit environment, which includes data engineering, data quality, data analysis, data visualization, and discovery/collaboration with internal clients.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Pursuing a BA or BS degree in analytics, nonprofit management, or data science
  • Be detail-oriented, flexible, organized and able to meet deadlines
  • Experience with Tableau, Tableau Prep, or other data visualization tools
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (written, oral, and electronic)
  • Willingness to learn
  • Commitment to the mission of Bread for the World

WORK ENVIRONMENT ISSUES:

  • This internship can be based in Washington, DC or remote
  • Bread is a hybrid organization
