Role Description The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in Bryan, TX. This role is responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining spatial data and maps to support regional planning, public safety, infrastructure, and community development initiatives. Daily tasks include collecting and processing geospatial data from various sources, performing data quality checks, and preparing maps and visualizations for internal teams, member governments, and public presentations. The GIS Technician will assist with geocoding, spatial analysis, and database maintenance, and will document workflows to ensure data integrity and reproducibility. This position collaborates with planners, program managers, and external partners to provide accurate mapping products and technical support for decision-making.
Qualifications
  • Proficiency with GIS software and tools such as Esri ArcGIS (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro), ArcGIS Online, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to perform spatial analysis, geocoding, data editing, and map production using standard GIS methodologies.
  • Experience managing spatial databases, working with shapefiles, geodatabases, and integrating tabular data with geographic data.
  • Skill in interpreting and digitizing data from aerial imagery, CAD drawings, survey data, and public datasets.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to conduct data validation and quality assurance checks.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for presenting maps and explaining technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and respond to requests from member governments in a timely, service-oriented manner.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with public sector or regional planning environments is beneficial.
  • Experience with basic scripting or automation (e.g., Python for ArcGIS or ModelBuilder) is a plus.
