Surface Water Maintenance/Treatment Operator Salary:  $19.50 per hour Benefits with a TCEQ class “C” Surface Water Operator license   JOB SUMMARY A Maintenance Technician is responsible for keeping a facility operating and repairing any problems when they are discovered before they have a chance to worsen. A Maintenance Technician will usually be required to perform a wide range of repair tasks around a facility.  This position also entails learning the operation of the surface water treatment plant. The individual may be responsible for properly operating and maintaining the BRPUA Surface Water facility under close supervision. Controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use. Operates and controls electric motor pumps and valves to regulate the flow of raw water into the treatment plant. Applies specified amounts of chemicals such as chlorine, ammonia, and caustic into water. May adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize and clarify water. Turns valves to regulate water through filter beds to remove impurities. May monitor SCADA and adjust controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure, water elevation and distribution of water. Assist with RO/UF membrane performance tracking and maintenance. May repair and lubricate machines and equipment using hand tools and power tools. May collect daily water samples and perform daily lab tests, to determine chlorine and turbidity and impurities in accordance with regular parameters. Responsible for keeping up with preventative maintenance on equipment and other duties assigned. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Individual will perform other duties assigned by supervisor/department head when needed.   EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Learns to diagnose and repair any process that has failed to get back online Responsible for minor janitorial duties  Learns to calculate dosages for various chemicals, and the purpose for which the chemicals are used. Learns to control and monitor treatment plant chemical feed pumps and various types of equipment to clarify, filter, and disinfect water for human consumption and industrial use. Learns to perform and record the results of various laboratory tests to assess water quality and to determine optimal chemical treatment, such as pH, alkalinity, turbidity, chlorine residual, hardness, temperature, conductivity and other related tests. Learns to asses and interpret data from laboratory tests to improve and maintain water quality.  Learn the steps of, and how to backwash filters using both manual and automatic sequences.  Becomes efficient at plant and laboratory operations, including maintenance of equipment, pumps, filters, and machinery, testing, quality control, and recordkeeping procedures.  Learns how to standardize laboratory equipment and adjust chemical feeders for optimal water treatment. Knowledge of  State and Federal requirements, rules and regulations for Water Treatment. Safe chemical handling practices Preferred Knowledge of Electrical Plumbing Scada/Plc Methods, materials, practices, equipment, and facilities involved in Water Treatment. Basic hand tools  Forklift Education High School diploma or equivalent ability to take courses and test for water treatment operator Special Requirements All state licensed personnel must pass a State of Texas Criminal background check.  The State of Texas has the authority to grant or deny the required license. Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and climb ladders and stairs.  With, or without accommodation, ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds. Ability to work in various types of weather, including safely driving in inclement weather to report to work as required. Ability to be on call for after hour calls.
