Job Summary
The Language Access Specialist supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of language access initiatives to promote inclusivity and equitable access to resources for multilingual communities and individuals with communication disabilities. This position works closely with internal staff, external partners, and community stakeholders to strengthen language services, ensure compliance with language access requirements, and build culturally responsive engagement strategies.
Responsibilities
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Translate written documents accurately while maintaining the original meaning and context.
- Provide real-time interpretation services during meetings, conferences, and events.
- Proofread and edit translations to ensure high-quality output.
- Conduct transcription of audio recordings into written format with precision.
- Collaborate with team members to develop language resources and tools.
- Utilize your linguistics knowledge to enhance communication strategies across departments.
- Engage in continuous learning to stay updated on language trends and best practices.
- Foster effective communication by utilizing strong writing skills in various formats
Qualifications
May provide coordination or guidance to interns, volunteers, or temporary staff as assigned.
Essential Functions
(Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following)
1. Assist in designing and implementing language access initiatives that address the needs of multilingual communities to include persons with limited English proficiency and communication disabilities.
2. Collaborate with internal departments, service providers, and community organizations to identify barriers and develop informed solutions.
3. Build and maintain relationships with interpreters, translators, and community-based organizations to expand language access networks.
4. Monitor and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of language access programs through data collection, analysis, and reporting for continuous improvement of services.
5. Prepare reports, presentations, training materials, multilingual resources and recommendations.
6. Identify funding opportunities and support budget tracking for language access initiatives.
7. Coordinate interpretation and translation services, serving as a liaison with service providers.
8. Develop human-centered internal and public-facing resources to support staff and community access.
9. Deliver presentations and training sessions to staff and community members on language access resources and compliance.
10. Attend meetings, prepare correspondence, and provide technical or confidential documentation as needed.
Supplemental Functions
1. Participate in professional meetings; stay current on best practices, trends, and innovations related to language access and community engagement.
2. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Sciences, Linguistics, Communications, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Knowledge
- Computer software including Word, Excel, databases, Canva, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
- English grammar, spelling, punctuation, note-taking, and professional writing standards.
- Principles of training, evaluation, and performance improvement.
- Report preparation and business communication practices.
- Interpretation and translation services best practices.
- Legal frameworks and compliance requirements related to language access.
