Position Summary:

Houseparents are responsible for the direct supervision, care, and well-being of residents in a group living environment. They provide a safe, structured, and nurturing atmosphere, assist with daily living activities, and contribute to the residents' personal and social development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervision and Care:
    • Provide a stable and supportive presence for residents in the facility.
    • Monitor and guide the behavior of residents to ensure a safe and respectful living environment.
    • Assist residents with personal hygiene, dressing, and other activities of daily living as needed.
  • Daily Activities:
    • Plan and participate in recreational and educational activities with residents.
    • Assist residents with homework and encourage academic development.
    • Facilitate life skills training, including cooking, budgeting, and household chores.
  • Household Management:
    • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the facility, including communal areas and resident rooms.
    • Ensure that meals are prepared and served in accordance with dietary guidelines.
    • Oversee laundry and ensure residents have clean clothing and linens.
  • Behavioral Guidance:
    • Implement and enforce rules and guidelines to promote positive behavior.
    • Use trauma-informed practices to de-escalate conflicts and manage behavioral challenges.
    • Document incidents and communicate concerns to supervisors or the assigned case worker.
  • Record Keeping and Communication:
    • Maintain daily logs of resident activities, behaviors, and incidents.
    • Attend staff meetings and contribute to care plan development for residents.
    • Communicate effectively with team members, counselors, and case workers regarding resident progress and concerns.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Respond promptly and appropriately to medical, emotional, or behavioral emergencies.
    • Follow established protocols for ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Additional training or certification in child care, counseling, or social work is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working with children or adolescents in a residential, educational, or social service setting is preferred.
    • Experience handling crisis situations or working with at-risk youth is a plus.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to remain patient and calm in high-stress situations.
    • Organizational and time management skills to handle multiple responsibilities.
    • Basic household management skills, including cooking and cleaning.
    • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
