What are the responsibilities and job description for the Long-Term Substitute School Nurse (RN) Elementary School position at Braintree Elementary School?
Braintree Elementary School is a small, close-knit rural school located in the heart of Braintree, Vermont. We are seeking a qualified, compassionate, and dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to serve as a long-term substitute for approximately 2.5 days per week. This part-time position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting the health, safety, and well-being of our elementary students in a collaborative and caring school environment.
The successful candidate will be an organized, proactive healthcare professional with a strong clinical background and a genuine commitment to student health and academic success.
Key Responsibilities
- Student Health Services
- Provide professional nursing care to students, including first aid, emergency care, and support for acute and chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, allergies, seizure disorders) during the school day.
- Medication Administration
- Safely administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications in accordance with physician orders, Vermont state regulations, and school district policies.
Health Assessments & Screenings
- Conduct required health screenings (e.g., vision and hearing) as mandated by the State of Vermont and follow up with students and families as appropriate.
Health Record Management
- Maintain accurate, confidential student health records, including immunization documentation and Individual Health Plans (IHPs), in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and Vermont Department of Health requirements.
Emergency Response
- Serve as the primary responder to medical emergencies at school, coordinating with emergency medical services as needed and communicating clearly with staff, administration, and families.
Infection Control
- Implement and monitor infection prevention and control practices to promote a healthy school environment.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and families to support student health needs, including those related to IEPs, 504 plans, and participation in school activities.
- Our administrative assistant is also a medical assistant and part of our health service team.
Qualifications
- Licensure
- Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Vermont.
Skills & Abilities
- Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED.
- Strong clinical judgment, assessment, and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism.
- Ability to work independently while managing the health needs of an elementary school population.
Compensation
- Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience, based on the school district’s substitute or part-time pay scale.
