JOB DESCRIPTION GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: At Braille Institute, we are driven by a shared purpose: to empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired through high-quality instruction and meaningful learning experiences. As an instructor, you play a vital role in fostering independence by delivering engaging, accessibility-driven education across in-person, hybrid, and virtual environments. You’ll collaborate with a diverse community of colleagues and participants, creating inclusive learning spaces where individuals can build essential skills and confidence. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Job Summary: Responsible for teaching various subjects and/or independent living skills to individuals who are visually impaired using established curriculum and instructional methods. Supports the delivery of accessibility-driven teaching strategies in in-person, hybrid, and online learning environments to promote skill development and independence. May assist with seminars and workshops for families, caregivers, and professionals to help support individuals who are visually impaired. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Deliver group and one-on-one instruction in assigned subject areas at the center, in community settings, or through virtual platforms. Implement established curriculum and lesson plans designed to build independent living skills. Monitor participant performance and maintain accurate records of attendance, participation, and progress. Prepare, organize, and maintain classroom materials, tools, and assistive equipment to ensure a safe and effective learning environment. Support workshops, seminars, and special events for participants, families, caregivers, and community partners. Assist with the development of instructional materials, videos, and accessible digital resources as directed. Partner with program leadership to support the creation of accessible content for virtual learning audiences. Design and facilitate workshops or instructional sessions for Blind and Visually Impaired participants and professionals as assigned. Provide guidance and support to volunteers assisting in classroom or program activities. Participate in professional development activities to maintain and expand instructional skills and knowledge of best practices. Perform additional duties as assigned. Responsibilities may evolve as organizational needs change while maintaining the overall scope of the position. Supervisory Responsibilities: Volunteers QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Knowledge and Education: A bachelor’s degree (ex/ BA) in a designated field of expertise is required (or may be substituted with one year of teaching experience). Strong knowledge of the subject matter taught is required. Previous online teaching experience is desirable. May require conversational knowledge of another language. Skills and Abilities: Position requires good communication, training, interpersonal, assessment, research, computer, presentation, organizational and time management skills. The ability to effectively teach visually impaired students in a particular field of expertise is essential. Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience, no degree required. Certifications/licenses: A valid driver's license and first aid/CPR certificate may be required. Work Environment: Position works in a classroom environment. Classroom environment(s) may include (1) in-person, traditional classroom setting, (2) hybrid in-person and online classroom, and/or (3) exclusively online classroom. May also work in the field. Physical Requirements: Position operates standard office equipment, adaptive tools/equipment, and materials needed to teach designated subjects. Frequent standing, walking and some lifting may be required. Some travel within an assigned region may also be needed.
