JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

Job Summary:  The DeafBlind Coordinator, American Sign Language Tactile Interpreter provides tactile American Sign Language interpretation and coordinates volunteer interpreters to support clients during Braille appointments, classes, and programs, while leading weekly Tactile American Sign Language and ProTactile communication classes for the DeafBlind community.

 

This role collaborates with leadership to strengthen programs, supports volunteer recruitment and training, ensures a safe and welcoming environment, and delivers translation and coordination services across all seven Southern California Centers as needed.

         

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

  • Provide interpretation and coordinate volunteer interpreters to support clients during Braille appointments and classes. 

 

  • Lead weekly Tactile American Sign Language and ProTactile communication classes for DeafBlind community members (as needed).

 

  • Support the Volunteer Impact Program (VIP) team with the recruitment, coordination, training, and mentoring of volunteer interpreters.

 

  • Work collaboratively with the Education Programs Manager and Regional Director to make program recommendations for continuous improvement. 

 

  • Help greet and gather students as they arrive at the Center.  Interface with staff and transportation services as needed. 

 

  • Provide safety recommendations and train colleagues as needed.

 

  • Provide translation and coordinator support to all seven Southern California Centers as needed (some travel may be required).

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Knowledge and Education:    A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Knowledge and application of the National Association of the Deaf, and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Code of Professional Conduct to ethical decision making and the interpreting process.

 

 

Skills and Abilities:  Excellent communication skills. Must demonstrate linguistic fluency and cognitive flexibility. Strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and ability to creatively solve problems.

 

 

 

Experience: Minimum of two years interpreting experience. Tactile American Sign Language and ProTactile training and experience preferred. Cultural knowledge of the Deaf community and its resources preferred.

 

 

Certifications/licenses: Certification or proof of fluency in interpreting Tactile American Sign Language and ProTactile required.

 

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirement:

 

 

Position works in a standard office environment. 

 

 

 

Hourly pay range: $26-$30

 

 

 

Schedule: Part-time, 3 days a week, Wednesday thru Friday; 8:00 AM-4:30 PM or 8:30 AM-5:00 PM.
