What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fractional Controller position at Brady CFO?
Fractional Controller - Agriculture & Construction
About the Role
Brady CFO is seeking a Fractional Controller who brings strong professional presence, sound judgment, and a bias for action to core accounting leadership. We are a Fractional CFO firm that partners with business owners and leadership teams to strengthen financial operations and improve decision-making. Success in this role relies heavily on having a consulting mindset, and not on narrow industry specialization alone.
This role supports primarily agriculture and construction clients, along with other asset-intensive and project-based businesses. The ideal candidate is a seasoned Controller who is comfortable working directly with owners and senior leaders, understands how financial operations support the broader business, and takes ownership of moving financial work forward with confidence, clarity, and accountability.
This role is best suited for Controllers who have regularly led conversations with ownership and operations and who naturally identify issues, take initiative, and follow through, rather than waiting for direction or operating purely transactionally.
At Brady CFO, Controllers are embedded into client organizations. They are expected to understand the business, surface issues early, communicate clearly, and maintain strong financial discipline while supporting steady operational progress.
This is a 1099 position.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Oversight
· Partner in the management of client accounting functions, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and operational or project-based accounting.
· Take ownership of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
· Maintain compliance with GAAP and applicable industry-specific accounting standards.
· Establish, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Industry-Specific Accounting Execution
· Oversee job costing, WIP, percentage-of-completion, grower accounting, and production cost accounting, depending on client needs.
· Ensure accurate allocation of labor, materials, overhead, and settlements.
· Actively review project, job, or production-level financial results and address issues as they arise.
Financial Reporting & Communication
· Prepare and present financial statements and management reports to business owners and leadership teams.
· Monitor budgets vs. actuals and proactively explain variances in operational terms.
· Preform light forecasting
· Ensure reporting is timely, clear, and consistently delivered.
· Develop and maintain dashboards, KPIs, and scorecards that support operational and financial oversight.
· Communicate trends, risks, and issues with clarity and appropriate urgency.
Operational Partnership & Judgment
· Partner with owners, project managers, and operational leaders to reinforce financial accountability.
· Identify accounting, reporting, and process gaps and take practical steps to resolve them.
· Apply sound judgment when navigating imperfect data, evolving systems, and real-world constraints.
· Drive follow-through on agreed-upon actions and improvements.
Systems, Processes & Improvement
· Evaluate accounting workflows and controls with an eye toward simplification, reliability, and scalability.
· Support accounting system, ERP, and operational software implementations from a Controller perspective.
· Help clients implement improvements that stick, not just recommendations.
External Coordination & Compliance
· Coordinate with client CPAs, auditors, banks, bonding agents, and insurance providers.
· Prepare and deliver financial information required for audits, bonding, and compliance.
· Ensure responsibilities across internal and external stakeholders are clearly defined and executed.
