Position Summary

The GeriPsych Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care on the Senior Care GeriPsych Unit. This role supports safe, compassionate, and therapeutic nursing care for geriatric psychiatric patients under the supervision of the Charge Nurse and/or Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN is responsible for medication administration, documentation, patient monitoring, and assisting with daily care needs. The LPN contributes to maintaining a therapeutic environment that promotes dignity, safety, and healing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, and monitoring of patients’ physical and mental status.

• Document care, observations, and interventions accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record (EMR).

• Assist in patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring required documentation and communication.

• Monitor for safety concerns, behavioral changes, and escalating situations, and promptly notify the RN or provider.

• Follow CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) techniques to help maintain a safe environment.

• Support patient hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and other activities of daily living.

• Engage patients and families in care planning and reinforce education provided by RNs and providers.

• Participate in shift huddles, safety rounds, and unit communications.

• Promote adherence to infection control, patient safety, and behavioral health standards.

• Follow established safety practices, including aseptic technique, fall prevention, and proper body mechanics.

• Collaborate with RNs, CNAs, providers, and interdisciplinary staff in carrying out care plans.

• Administer medications safely, including double-checking high-risk medications with RN per hospital policy and documenting the effect of PRN medications.

• Respond to behavioral or medical emergencies as directed by the RN, demonstrating calm and effective action.

• Maintain professional communication, confidentiality, and respectful interactions with patients, families, and staff.

• Ensure supplies are stocked and equipment is functional for patient care.

• Maintain competencies and participate in required education and training to support professional growth and unit standards.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the state of Arkansas (or compact state).

• Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required.

• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience preferred, especially with behavioral health or geriatric populations.

• Strong observational, communication, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in a behavioral health, geriatric, or hospital setting.

• Familiarity with EMR systems and behavioral health documentation standards.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, and lifting.

• Ability to assist with patient mobility and manage behavioral episodes safely.

• Must be able to lift and support at least 50 lbs.

• Ability to respond quickly to psychiatric or medical emergencies.
