Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – MedSurg

Position Summary

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) on the MedSurg unit provides direct patient care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. This is a safety-sensitive position. The CNA assists patients with activities of daily living, supports nursing staff in delivering safe and effective care, and maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and staff. The CNA also assists with routine and repetitive patient care activities as delegated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, feeding, and ambulation

• Obtain and record vital signs, weights, intake and output, and other observations as directed

• Report changes in patient condition promptly to licensed nursing staff

• Provide safe patient transport within the hospital as needed

• Support nurses with positioning, turning, and transferring patients, using proper body mechanics and equipment

• Maintain patient rooms in a clean, orderly, and safe condition

• Stock and maintain supplies in patient care areas

• Respond to call lights and patient needs in a timely and professional manner

• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients

• Accurately document care provided in the electronic medical record in accordance with hospital policy

• Follow infection control protocols and hospital safety procedures at all times

• Promote patient dignity, comfort, and respect in all interactions

• Perform additional duties as assigned by licensed nursing staff or the charge nurse

• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to support patient recovery and discharge goals

• Participate in required training and continuing education to maintain competency and compliance

• Assist in elimination via urinals, bedpans, and bowel and bladder programs

• Assist with post mortem care

• Assist in preparing patients for meals, including feeding patients

• Assist in turn, cough, and deep breathing routines

• Accept supervision and seek assistance as needed

• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patients assigned

• Comply with job-related behavior as outlined in the employee handbook

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required

• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licensed by the State of Arkansas

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

• Previous experience in a hospital setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team

• Strong communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare staff

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively

• Compassionate, patient-focused approach to care delivery

• Basic computer skills for electronic documentation

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, and moving of patients and equipment

• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds

• Ability to assist with patient transfers and repositioning using appropriate techniques

• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods

• Must be able to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions and maintain nursing records and charts

Qualifications
