Position Title: Certified Nursing Assistant – Emergency Room


Position Summary

The Emergency Room Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct patient care and support to the Emergency Department under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. This is a safety-sensitive position. The CNA assists patients with activities of daily living, supports nursing staff in delivering safe and effective care, documents patient care in the electronic medical record, and maintains a clean and safe environment. The CNA also provides assistance during emergency transports, including helicopter transfers to and from the helipad. This role requires flexibility, attention to detail, and the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licensed by the State of Arkansas, in good standing
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required prior to start of employment
  • Previous hospital or emergency department experience preferred
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, feeding, and ambulation
  • Obtain, record, and report vital signs, weights, intake and output, and other observations as directed
  • Report changes in patient condition promptly to licensed nursing staff
  • Provide safe patient transport within the hospital and to other departments as needed
  • Assist with emergency transports including helicopter transfers; may be required to push stretchers to and from the helipad and support safe patient movement during air medical transfers
  • Support nurses with positioning, turning, transferring patients, and assisting with turn, cough, and deep breathing routines
  • Assist in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
  • Provide support during emergency codes and rapid response situations
  • Maintain patient rooms and treatment areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition
  • Stock and maintain supplies in patient care areas
  • Respond to call lights and patient needs in a timely and professional manner
  • Accurately document care provided in the electronic medical record in accordance with hospital policy
  • Properly handle and dispose of biohazard materials following hospital policy
  • Support nurses with specimen collection and documentation as directed
  • Assist in elimination via urinals, bedpans, and bowel and bladder programs
  • Assist with post mortem care when necessary
  • Accept supervision and seek assistance as needed
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population served
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to support patient treatment and discharge goals
  • Participate in required training and continuing education to maintain competency and compliance
  • Comply with hospital policies, infection control guidelines, and HIPAA requirements
  • Provide compassionate, respectful care to patients, families, and visitors

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare staff
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a high-volume environment
  • Compassionate, patient-focused approach to care delivery
  • Basic computer skills for electronic documentation

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting required
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Ability to assist with patient transfers and repositioning using appropriate techniques
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Must demonstrate emotional stability and the ability to cope with high stress situations

Schedule

Full-time position, 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM, including weekends and holidays as scheduled.
