POSITION SUMMARY
Title: Government Affairs Associate
Position Description: The Legislative Assistant plays a key role in supporting legislative operations, including policy research, budget analysis, and committee monitoring. This position requires a strong understanding of the legislative process, attention to detail, and the ability to summarize complex legislative activities. The role involves attending key legislative meetings, preparing policy reports, tracking political action committee candidates, and providing logistical support for presentations and committee sessions.
Location: Topeka, KS
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Client & Legislative Strategy Support:
- Assist Government Affairs Account Managers as needed.
- Assist in the development of legislative testimony and committee materials.
Legislative Budget Management:
- Attend relevant House Committee on Appropriations and Senate Committee on Ways & Means meetings and subcommittees.
- Participate in budget conference committees and stay informed on specific agency budgets.
Policy Report Preparation:
- Summarize weekly legislative activities across multiple policy areas.
- Provide concise reports on committee hearings, including summaries of bills and proposed legislative actions.
- Prepare client legislative reports.
Legislative Research and Committee Monitoring:
- Track and summarize key legislative and regulatory developments.
- Monitor legislative committees, regulatory hearings, and board meetings.
- Attend legislative committee meetings, interim committee meetings and regulatory hearings as necessary.
- Conduct research to support legislative strategy and policy decisions.
Political Action Committee Support:
- Assist with the tracking of political action committee candidates, campaign finance data and related activities.
Legislative Event Planning and Execution:
- Assist in planning and execution of Capitol Days and other legislative events.
- Coordinate logistics for event attendees, including scheduling meetings with legislators and ensuring all materials and resources are prepared.
- Work closely with event organizers and stakeholders to ensure smooth event operations and communication.
- Provide on-site support during events to facilitate meetings, manage schedules, and address any issues that arise.
- Prepare materials for legislative presentations, if necessary.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of legislative processes and budgets.
- Ability to analyze and summarize legislative and policy issues effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in preparing reports, tracking legislation, and attending committee meetings.
- Proficiency in research and data management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Event planning and coordination experience, particularly in a legislative or government setting.
Education and Experience:
- A degree in political science, public policy, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience in legislative affairs, policy analysis, or government relations is preferred.
