General Position Summary:
The ED Physician performs various functions in ensuring that patients that need immediate attention are stabilized and properly cared for so as to avoid loss of life. ED Physicians provide care to patients in ambulatory, urgent, and emergent care settings. ED Physicians assess, diagnose, and manage episodic illnesses, injuries, and acute exacerbations of chronic diseases.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Carry out immediate evaluation and management of emergency patients that are brought in for treatment.
2. Respond to all forms of cardiac/cardiopulmonary arrest with immediate effect.
3. Perform interpretation of electrocardiogram and make arrangement for backup from EMS.
4. Request appropriate medical tests, and based on the results of those tests, develop a treatment plan.
5. Develop effective patient care plans.
6. Refer patients to appropriate specialists.
7. Ensure that patients are stable before transferring them to a higher level of care or to a different department.
8. Provide instructions for discharge and complete necessary paperwork for patients and their records.
9. Maintain patients’ medical records.
10. Coordinate with different departments within the hospital to ensure patients receive necessary treatment.
11. Review all medical reports concerning patients.
12. Prescribe pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies.

• Must be able to treat patients using his/her best judgement as a Provider.
• Oversee the practice of Nurse Practitioners (if requested) as appropriate and when required by state law.
Work Experience, Education, and Certifications:
• Licensed to practice medicine as a Doctor of Medicine in the State of Virginia. BLS, ACLS, and PALS will also be required.
Physical Requirements / Demands:
• Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, and walking.
• Must be able to lift up to 200 pounds at times, with assistance.
