Your Daily Impact on Farm Operations
A day in the life of an irrigation technician at Bracher Farms is hands-on and rewarding. You’ll monitor and maintain irrigation systems to keep crops healthy, inspecting lines, adjusting water flow, and troubleshooting issues for efficiency. Alongside irrigation work, you’ll operate tractors to support essential field operations, with hours increasing during harvest—often 8 to 10 per day. This role offers variety, responsibility, and the chance to work with modern equipment in a collaborative environment. Your Key Responsibilities
- Manage and adjust irrigation systems, including pumps, valves, and sprinklers, to deliver water efficiently according to crop requirements.
- Oversee water distribution to ensure consistent coverage and prevent overwatering or dry areas.
- Perform scheduled inspections to detect and correct leaks, blockages, or equipment failures.
- Carry out routine servicing and repairs, such as cleaning filters, replacing worn components, and maintaining pumps.
- Prepare systems for irrigation cycles by confirming proper settings and operational readiness.
- Respond quickly to performance issues or breakdowns to minimize disruptions.
- Maintain detailed records of irrigation schedules, maintenance activities, and system performance, and report updates to farm leadership.
- Uphold safety standards and encourage effective teamwork in all irrigation operations.
- Provide support for other farm tasks as needed and complete additional assignments from farm leadership.
- Operate tractors and other farm machinery to support daily field operations, including transporting crops, equipment, and materials.
- Assist with planting, cultivation, and general field preparation using tractors and implements as directed.
- Increase tractor operation during harvest season, often for extended periods (8–10 hours), to ensure timely crop movement and efficient harvest logistics.
- Maintain and troubleshoot AutoTrac components, including displays, receivers, and sensors, to minimize downtime.
- Operate tractors equipped with John Deere AutoTrac/AutoSteer systems to ensure accurate and efficient field operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Technical training, irrigation, or agriculture preferred.
- John Deere Auto Steer Experience
- 2 years of experience with agricultural irrigation systems preferred.
- Solid understanding of irrigation methods, pumps, valves, and timers.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair irrigation equipment efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety in all operations.
- Electrical knowledge is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods while working around equipment.
- Lift and move heavy objects (up to 100 lbs. occasionally) and perform physical tasks such as bending, climbing, and kneeling.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions—including heat, cold, wind, rain and dust—around vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Operate and climb onto large machinery, work in confined spaces, and use PPE such as gloves, goggles, and hearing protection.
