Boys Who Write (BWW) is seeking a bright, engaging teacher for our Virtual Mentor position this fall.
The Virtual Mentor co-leads Boys Who Write sessions over Zoom, delivering social emotional skill-building lessons and mentoring students through creative projects (music making, video creation, etc). Working in partnership with an in-class facilitator, the virtual mentor remotely leads: full-group instruction, facilitates small groups, and runs one-on-one check-ins. This is a remote, part-time role that will primarily take place on weekday afternoons in ET.
10 hr/wk
Project Start Date: Mid August
Project End Date: Mid December with potential, support and encouragement to continue to grow into a full time role.
Responsibilities
- Co-lead engaging live BWW sessions over Zoom using curriculum provided by Boys Who Write.
- Deliver instruction across BWW’s creative areas: music production, video, writing, and game design.
- Facilitate small-group work and one-on-one mentoring check-ins as students develop their projects.
- Sustain an engaging on-camera presence that holds the attention of a virtual classroom.
- Partner with the in-class facilitator and program team to ensure sessions meet students’ needs.
- Prepare for each session and contribute feedback to strengthen the program.
Required qualifications
BWW’s model is built around positive role models, and the Virtual Mentor is our most direct expression of that. For this reason, the role is open to applicants who have:
- Experience in at least two of BWW’s creative areas: music production, video editing, writing, and/or game design.
- A dynamic, engaging, and confident on-camera presence.
- An ability to connect with middle-school-aged boys.
- The ability to navigate sensitive conversations regarding masculinity, growing up, and gender identity.
- Reliability, strong organization, and comfort working independently with technology.
- A quiet, private space with stable internet for hosting video calls.
Preferred qualifications
- Advanced proficiency with Zoom, DAWs, video-editing software, and general productivity tools.
- Prior experience teaching or mentoring youth.
- Fluency with AI-era tools.
