AmeriCorps members participating in Utah’s Youth Mental Health Corps through Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County will embark on an exciting path, helping youth in communities across the state access mental health resources and improve their well-being. Members will receive training, professional network development, career exploration and readiness, wraparound supports, and a stipend.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County provides school day and after school-based programs to students throughout the state of Utah. These programs are located at schools and run weekdays during the school year. YMHC AmeriCorps members will enjoy hands-on experience while earning recognized credentials that represent a beneficial step toward fulfilling and in-demand careers in the healthcare, mental health, education, and social services fields.
The individual selected for this position will serve as an AmeriCorps member. AmeriCorps is a national service opportunity, not just a regular job. You will be expected to complete a minimum of 300 service hours throughout your school-year term. LOCATION:
Successful Candidates will be assigned to a host site school in southern Utah County.
JOB SUMMARY:
- Part-time, weekdays, afterschool, September-May
- Shifts starting as early as 8:00 am
- Monthly/quarterly trainings
- Schedule details will vary depending on your site
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES may include:
- Support licensed healthcare professionals by promoting recovery and well-being or by performing allowable administrative and supportive functions;
- Complete Mental Health School Navigator or credited certification during or within six months of the end of service term;
- Lead mental health and resilience lessons during the time allocated each week;
- Maintain records of lesson plans and track data for the number of youth served;
- Complete weekly timesheets and regular reports;
- Evaluate progress of youth served using assessments and rubrics.
Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:
- Build positive relationships with youth, families, school staff, and your team;
- Promote and stimulate program participation;
- Provide guidance and role modeling to members;
- Ensure youth are encouraged to participate in a variety of program areas/activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in program area(s);
- Demonstrate leadership to assure conduct, safety, and development of youth.
Program Development and Implementation
- Effectively implement and administer programs, services, and activities for all youth and visitors;
- Monitor and evaluate program services and activities;
- Oversee youth safety, program quality, and appearance of the host site at all times.
Supervision
- Supervise and ensure safety during indoor and outdoor activities (rain or shine);
- Ensure a productive work environment by participating in regular staff meetings.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- May participate in special programs and/or events.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and all grant required training.
- Participate in MLK Day of Service and National AmeriCorps Service Week.
COMPENSATION:
This position will provide a living allowance of $4,800 for the school year paid over the term of service. The stipend will be split up and paid on a bi-weekly (every two weeks) basis during your term of service. NOTE: You will not be paid hourly.
In addition, an Education Award of $1,565.08 will be awarded upon successful completion of the term of service. The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit received by individuals who complete terms of national service in approved AmeriCorps programs. This award (similar to a Pell Grant) can be used to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions.
Between the living stipend (paid directly to you) and the two Education Awards (paid to your institution on your behalf), your potential total compensation for the school year is $6,365.08.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- 18 years of age.
- United States citizen or legal permanent resident.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Meet the requirements set by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
- Experience in working with children, preferably teens.
- Knowledge of youth development.
- Motivate youth and manage behavior problems.
- Ability to work with the school and general public.
- Plan and implement quality programs for youth.
- Organize and supervise youth in a safe environment.
- CPR and First Aid Certifications may be required.
- Valid State Driver's License
- Preference will be given to individuals with educational or work experience related to healthcare, mental health, education, and social services fields.
