What are the responsibilities and job description for the Before Care Youth Development Professional (YDP) - Mishawaka Sites position at Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County?
Summary:
The Before-Care YDP cares for club members in the early morning hours before school, ensuring a safe, welcoming, organized environment. While extensive programming is not the focus, the Before Care YDP supports informal, positive interaction, light structure, and appropriate supervision so that youth start their day on a positive note. Currently, our need is at Mishawaka school sites from 6:30 am-8:15 am.
BGCNIC serves 3,000 children ages five to 18 at 38 sites across northern Indiana through summer and before and after-care programming, with a strong focus on social and emotional learning, college and workforce readiness, and academic enrichment to ensure every child has a chance to meet his or her potential.
Essential Functions:
Work with Club Director and fellow staff to plan, organize, and implement Club curriculum, programs, and activity schedules, including small group, large group, individual, and community-based activities. Sustain dedicated presence on site during all hours of operation. Consistency and reliability are keys to success in this direct-service role.
- Arrive ready to open the before-care space and prepare for member arrival (6:30 a.m. start at most sites)
- Supervise youth (typically elementary age) as they enter the site, check-in, and move through the before-care period until school begins
- Ensure the environment is safe, clean, and orderly (perform basic tidying, monitor spaces, set up/put away materials)
- Engage youth in casual, age-appropriate activities (board games, reading corner, free play, simple group interaction) that allow them to settle in for the day
- Maintain positive youth relationships — foster a sense of belonging, encourage good behavior, model respectful interactions
- Monitor and enforce behavior expectations and site policies — intervene if needed, escalate issues to Site Coordinator or Club Director
- Track attendance, check in/out with school transition, communicate with school or club leadership as required
- Assist with the transition to breakfast (lining up, escorting, etc.)
- Be a consistent, reliable presence — maintain punctuality, dependability, and professional demeanor
- Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and club/organization initiatives as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator to support the before-care program
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Minimum High School graduate or equivalent; some post-secondary education is preferred. CPR certification is preferred. Experience working with youth, including recreation, coaching, training, tutoring, or teaching. Knowledge of physical, social recreational games, coaching or tutoring methods. Ability and willingness to consistently engage youth in all activities. Knowledge of basic Microsoft office, web- and non-web based computer applications. Must be physically and mentally able to perform essential functions, possess sufficient physical strength and energies required to effectively engage in activities with children, and support and sustain the physical environment.
- Ability to move, walk, run, bend, reach, stoop in the delivery of member care;
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, pull up to 20 lbs.;
- Ability to frequently handle gross and fine manipulations such as grasping, twisting of small objects;
- Ability to handle hazardous/infectious waste; work where chemicals are used for cleaning; work where mechanical and electrical hazards, and where environmental dust, mist, steam are occasionally present;
- Ability to operate a vehicle in a safe manner;
- Ability to accurately read and complete documentation; assist children in written/other activities;
- Ability to work in a rapid paced environment where noise and stress levels may be high;
- Ability to interface professionally with a diverse group of persons.
