What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Development Professional position at Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas?
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Supervise and promote activities and programs during summer program for children and youth in areas such as academic success, arts, life and workforce readiness, and physical education. Part-time, minimum 20 hours per week.
KEY ROLES: (Essential Job Responsibilities)
Prepare Youth for Success:
- Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of positive Youth Development Outcomes.
- Promote and encourage program participation.
- Provide guidance and role modeling to members, deescalating behaviors as they occur.
- Using the Boys & Girls Clubs philosophy, maintain age-appropriate discipline among youth participants so that programs are carried out safely and efficiently.
- Exhibit a warm, concerned attitude toward youth that uses a positive approach in interacting with individuals, as well as groups of children.
Program Development and Implementation:
- Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for members.
- Monitor and evaluate programs, services, and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the Club.
- Demonstrate leadership to assure conduct, safety, and development of members.
- Evaluate programs on a continual basis and ensure programs/activities are in keeping with gender and cultural diversity, including new, fun, and inviting program ideas.
- Effectively communicate with peers, supervisor, and members of all ages, being an active positive team member.
Supervision:
- Ensure a productive work environment by participating in staff meetings, site meetings, and Club meetings (upon request).
- Oversee proper record keeping and reporting, including activities and events conducted, breakdowns of participation figures, and any member conduct or other issues.
- Attend trainings and other development/professional growth opportunities as requested.
- Awareness of safety procedures of the Club, as well as fire, tornado and lockdown procedures.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Knowledge of program schedule.
- May participate and/or oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Keystone, Torch Club, Career Launch, Teen Specific Programs), and/or participate in the implementation of other club activities as necessary.
- May be required to drive Club van.
- May be required to answer phones and perform other light administrative duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close contact with Club staff and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain, or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain contact with parents or guardians to communicate about Club activities, explain or interpret Club guidelines, and address any conduct issues relative to members. May be required to communicate with or work closely with school principals and classroom instructors.

QualificationsSKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Experience working with children, preferred experience working with groups of children.
- Knowledge of youth development.
- Ability to relate well with children, motivate youth and manage behaviors.
- Ability to interact with the public (both verbal and written).
- Ability to implement quality programs for youth.
- Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and mobile when supervising children in a group setting.
- Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
- Valid Driver’s License with little or no violations, preferred.
- Pass background check and complete fingerprinting.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED:
- CPR/First Aid Certification (training provided as needed)
PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands
- Regularly: walking, bending, reaching, stretching, hearing and understanding speech at normal levels, speaking in an audible tone so others may understand clearly, seeing, repetitive hand motions, physical ability to push/pull/lift/carry up to 5 pounds.
- Occasionally: lifting 10 to 50 pounds, and stationary work.
Equipment Use
- Regularly: phones, iPads, and two-way radios
- Occasionally: kitchen equipment, audio visual equipment, copy/scanner, and hand tools.
Work Environment
- Regularly: indoor and outdoor work in varied weather conditions, working both with a team and independently, fast paced and noisy conditions.
- Occasionally: odors, varied lighting, small and/or enclosed spaces.
Mental Demands
- Regularly: managing workplace stressors and handling noncompliant behaviors.
