The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
We are looking for employees who are passionate about giving whatever it takes to build a great future for kids. The Program Director reports to the Branch Director, and is responsible for overseeing the delivery of a broad range of programs within a designated Club; such as Teen Programming, Education, Social Recreation, Character & Leadership, and Physical Education. You will plan, develop, and oversee implementation and supervise programs and program staff. Will require occasional travel to Mobile for staff meetings and other training/development sessions. Some training will take place as a half-day event on a Saturday, typically not more than once per quarter.
HOURS:
Academic Year – Monday through Friday between 10:00 AM and 6:30 PM
Summers - Monday through Friday between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
This timetable varies based on scheduled Club hours and the discretion of the Branch Director. Extra hours as needed for special events, sometimes on weekends.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
Prepare Youth for Success
1. Plan and oversee the administration of designated Clubhouse programs and activities that support Youth Development Outcomes:
- Establish Clubhouse program objectives consistent with organizational goals and mission.
- Oversee the provision of day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals.
- Ensure that members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program areas/activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in program area(s).
- Demonstrate leadership to assure conduct, safety and development of members.
Program Development and Implementation
2. Establish and maintain Clubhouse program goals and settings that ensure the health and safety of members. Verify that site staff understand and effectively communicate standards of program, that they confirm program areas are safe, well-ventilated and well lit, and that Club equipment is maintained in good working condition.
3. Evaluate Club programs on a continual basis and confirm that programs/activities respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
4. Control Clubhouse program and activity expenditures within approved budget.
Supervision
5. Allocate and monitor work assigned to program staff and volunteers, providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal. Identify and support training and development opportunities for assigned staff and volunteers.
6. Oversee proper record keeping and reporting including programs, activities and events conducted. Breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements, and any problems and/or issues.
7. Ensure productive and effective performance by all program staff and volunteers.
Marketing and Public Relations
8. Increase visibility of Club programs via posting of daily schedule, announcements of upcoming events and the dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers and media releases.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. May oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Keystone, Youth of the Year and Awards Programs), and/or participate in the implementation of other unit activities as necessary.
2. May be required to drive Club van periodically (requires minimum age of 25 and a clean driving record for the last three years, to meet our insurance requirements).
3. May consult with parents concerning member and branch issues.
4. May handle deposits and banking transactions.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, members’ parents, and others to assist in resolving problems.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Four-year degree in related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of two years’ work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization, planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
- Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities.
- Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications.
- Willing to travel to Mobile for occasional meetings/training, with Saturday training approximately once per quarter.
Work Environment:
- This job operates in a Boys and Girls Club after-school program environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers with multiple software programs, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
- This position can at times be a sedentary role. However, during active periods considerable attention to the movement of members, parents, and visitors throughout the facility is required. Bending or standing and some lifting, as necessary.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Visual: Normal acuity required daily for making color distinction, depth of sight, preparing/analyzing figures, computer use, and written records 8 hours
Communication: Able to express thoughts and ideas in an accurate and understandable manner through verbal and written format with internal and external contacts 8 hours per day
Movement: Ability to maneuver within work site 6-8 hours per day
Lifting/Pulling/Pushing/Carrying: Able to comfortably move and manipulate up to 20 lbs of weight up to 4-6 hours per day
