Job Title: Lifeguard-Summer season (with the opportunity to continue working during the school year if mutually agreeable)
Location: Fox Point (90 Ives Street) and South Side (1 Louisa Street) branches in Providence. Candidates must be available to work at either branch.
Reports to: Aquatics Manager
Payrate: $17 - $18/hour, depending on experience
Schedule: We have one opening for a summer seasonal Lifeguard. Approximately 25 hours per week (5 hours per day, Monday through Friday). Must be available from July 6 through August 21 (no program on July 1, 2, 3 and August 7 and 10). Current Lifeguard certification (through American Red Cross or equivalent) is required. Swim Instructor experience preferred. Further Lifeguarding employment during the school year is a possibility if mutually agreeable.
General Description: Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of aquatics participants by preventing and responding to emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Lifeguarding certification through American Red Cross or equivalent (must provide evidence of certification).
- Current certification in First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (must provide evidence of certification).
- Minimum of 1 year of Lifeguarding experience.
- Swim Instructor experience (preferred).
- Must be at least 16 years old (age 18 preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to follow and enforce required safety policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated maturity; advanced understanding of the critical importance of being alert and aware of swimmers' safety at all times.
- Must obtain required pre-employment clearances, including (but not limited to): national, state, and local criminal records background checks; continuous criminal records watch while employed by BGCP; state background checks for child abuse or sex offender records; drug screen (for illegal drugs); employment verifications; reference checks.
Responsibilities:
- Recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.
- Enforce all aquatic facility policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Inspect the Aquatics areas (as directed) on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.
- Complete records and reports as required (attendance, incident reports, skills progression, etc.)
- Complete required pre-employment trainings.
- Participate in regular in-service trainings.
- Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).
- Assist supervisor with pool maintenance as needed.
- Complete opening and/or closing routines, and additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Teach swimming skills to school-age children.
- Provide a safe and fun learning environment for students.
- Instruct students on proper swimming techniques and safety rules.
- Enforce pool rules and regulations.
- Conduct swim safety tests and evaluate students' abilities.
