DEPARTMENT/PROJECT OVERVIEW


The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD or Clubs) CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable and fun environment. POSITION OVERVIEW 


Reporting to the Facilities and Maintenance Director, the Facilities Maintenance Specialist performs skilled maintenance, repair, adjustment and minor construction work in the trades to ensure that multiple countywide BGCGSD operated facilities are properly maintained and meet BGCGSD standards. Duties may include but are not limited to a variety of trades, including but not limited to carpentry, painting, plumping, electrical, and mechanical, energy management, fire and life safety and keys/security systems. Trains entry level staff members in facilities maintenance trades. Assist in planning work, identifying staff training needs, obtaining bids, and in project management. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 


1. SAFETY WELLNESS


  • Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all youth, staff, and visitors by consistently enforcing safety protocols and organizational policies.

  • Be proactive in identifying and reporting any safety concerns or maintenance requirements to ensure a safe working environment for everyone.

  • Participate in safety drills and contribute to ongoing risk assessment and emergency preparedness efforts.

  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of Club safety and wellness policies and procedures across the Club

  • Ensures all maintenance equipment and vehicle is in good condition and is cleaned before and after use.

  • 2. FACILITIES MAINTENANCE


  • Performs preventative maintenance on building systems, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and control systems and related components; tests system competency and component devices and evaluates performance. Assists Director in planning and scheduling preventative maintenance work and recommends approaches to preventative maintenance programs.

  • Repairs and maintains a variety of facilities systems, components and structures; repairs building plumbing, low-voltage, and line voltage electric systems, door hardware, fire and life safety protection equipment/systems, sprinkler systems, sensors and related hardware and software; constructs and maintains indoor/outdoor facilities, fans, lights and related; conducts structural inspections for safety.

  • Performs minor electrical maintenance to include but not be limited to replacement or repair of fixtures (e.g. wall switches and outlets, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and tubes, ballast, sockets, fuses, minor appliances, cords, etc.) using appropriate hand, power and specialty tools.

  • Performs minor plumbing maintenance (e.g. replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains, etc.).

  • Performs minor painting, carpentry and masonry work (e.g. preparing surfaces and using brush, sprayer, or roller to apply paints, stains, and varnishes, hanging doors, fitting locks and handles, etc.).

  • Performs service and preventative maintenance on small, motorized equipment engines; troubleshoots equipment problems and identifies when appropriate for external service provider to make repairs or perform warranty work.

  • Identifies repair and maintenance projects requiring the assistance of contractors or vendors; participates in bid estimates and evaluations of project costs; monitors work of vendors or contractors; assists in the review of new construction or remodel plans to assure compliance with facility maintenance standards.

  • Accesses and makes all levels of adjustments to computerized control systems, such as for lighting or energy management systems; and troubleshoots control system problems.

  • Performs minor painting, carpentry and masonry work, plumbing, electrical maintenance.

  • Reconfigures, installs, positions, and remounts modular offices and space to accommodate user needs and maximize office spacing using various hand, power and specialty tools, dollies and hand trucks.

  • 3. FACILITYTRAINING 


  • Maintains a broad working knowledge of materials, systems and code requirements related to maintenance of Club facilities.

  • Responds to Club emergencies and closures including adverse weather to ensure that all facilities are protected and remain operational.

  • Knows and understands all safety procedures of the Club. Trains entry level staff on safety procedures related to facility operations. Assists in structural safety inspections.

  • Trains entry level staff in facilities maintenance trades; assists Director to determine training needs for work group.

  • 4. ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISION 


  • Direct, train, and manage the work of personnel..

  • Regularly performs up to date recordkeeping related to preventative maintenance/repairs; tracks/closes work orders, and monitors project statuses.

  • Develop and monitor a repair request dashboard to monitor average response time, completion time, emergency repairs, costs, and trends.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Facilities, Safety and Compliance Manager, and Branch Managers to address and support facility upkeep as applicable.

  • Operates a Club vehicle and is responsible for its safe operation and reporting any observed maintenance needs.

  • Provide support to special events as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • QUALIFICATIONS 


  • Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent and 5 years of facilities maintenance, construction, or repair experience in a commercial or industrial setting.

  • Two years of education or training, or an Associate’s Degree, in the facilities maintenance trades may substitute for two years of work experience.

  • Experience managing staff; leadership, work direction, training, evaluation and performance management.

  • Knowledgeable in all phases of construction and building maintenance; working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry repair.

  • Demonstrated expertise using a variety of power and hand tools and power equipment.

  • Experience supporting multiple facilities simultaneously and prioritizing work across locations.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with site leadership, vendors, and staff in a professional manner.

  • Knowledge of OSHA workplace health and safety standards and procedures; compliant with regulatory requirements.

  • Comfortable using maintenance management software, Microsoft Teams, email, and digital documentation tools.

  • Demonstrates strong independent judgment in identifying maintenance and safety risks.

  • Project management experience to plan and coordinate work; track and plan preventative maintenance work; maintain records and reports in computerized and written formats.

  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT



    • Successful completion of pre-employment background check

    • Candidates must maintain a valid California driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and current automobile insurance, with proof of 100/300 coverage provided upon request.

    • CPR & First Aid Certification.

    • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends that coincide with events and meetings, and multiple work sites
