PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Van Driver provides safe, reliable, and timely transportation for youth ages 6–18 and staff between Club locations, schools, and approved program sites. This role ensures passenger safety and well-being by operating vehicles in compliance with organizational policies and state and federal regulations, maintaining accurate transportation documentation, and supporting Club operations during arrivals and departures. The Van Driver fosters a positive, respectful environment in the vehicle while upholding the mission and safety standards of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Transportation

  • Safely operate Club-owned vehicles to transport youth and staff to and from designated schools, Club locations, field trips, and other approved activities, in compliance with all federal, state, and local traffic laws and Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago policies and procedures.
  • Conduct and document pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure vehicles are safe, clean, and in good working order; promptly report maintenance needs, mechanical issues, accidents, and safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follow assigned routes and transportation schedules, safely pick up and drop off authorized riders at designated locations, and communicate any delays, route changes, or other transportation issues as needed.
  • Ensure the safety, supervision, and appropriate behavior of all passengers by enforcing seat belt requirements, child passenger safety laws and best practices, and Club transportation policies.
  • Maintain accurate transportation documentation, including attendance rosters, mileage records, vehicle inspection reports, incident reports, and other required records.
  • Coordinate routine vehicle maintenance, fueling, and repairs with the supervisor and approved vendors as directed.
  • Communicate professionally with Club staff, school personnel, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders about transportation needs and concerns.
  •  Foster a safe, positive, respectful, and welcoming environment for youth by building supportive relationships and serving as a professional representative of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.

Program Support

  • Work closely with the Club Director to identify program and operational support needs across transportation routes.
  • Assist with the supervision and engagement of youth by supporting Club programs, activities, transitions, and special events as assigned.
  • Collaborate with Club staff to foster a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all members.
  • Build positive, supportive relationships with youth and serve as a role model aligned with the mission and values of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.
  • Support daily Club operations by assisting with program setup, cleanup, attendance, and other administrative or operational tasks as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and required training to maintain knowledge of organizational policies, safety procedures, and best practices in youth development.
Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must be at least 25 years old.
  • Previous experience transporting youth is preferred.
  • Previous experience working with youth preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications preferred, or the ability to obtain them within a designated timeframe.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Valid Illinois driver's license and a driving record meeting Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago insurance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate passenger vehicles and exercise sound judgment across a variety of driving conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, attentive, and focused while transporting youth in an active setting.
  • Dependable, punctual, and committed to maintaining consistent attendance and reliability
  • Ability to build positive relationships with youth, families, and coworkers.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks, including fingerprinting, in accordance with organizational policy and applicable law.

Driver Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to operate a Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago vehicle, employees must:

  • Be at least 25 years of age.
  • Meet all organizational and insurance eligibility requirements.
  • Be physically capable of safely operating a vehicle, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Maintain a driving record that meets the organization’s insurance standards.
  • Has no medical condition that would impair the safe operation of a motor vehicle

The following will disqualify an individual from operating a Club vehicle:

  • Conviction for Driving Under the Influence (DUI/DWI).
  • Conviction for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, or hit-and-run.
  • Suspended or revoked driver's license within the past three (3) years.
  • Three (3) or more at-fault accidents within the past 12 months.
  • Driving violations that exceed the organization's insurance eligibility standards.
  • Falsification or omission of driving history or qualifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed at a combination of a Club facility and a Club-owned van, transporting youth between school and Club locations and supporting daily programming.
  • Requires active engagement with youth throughout the workday, including extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and moving between program areas.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while driving and frequently enter and exit the vehicle.
  • Must be able to safely assist youth entering and exiting the vehicle and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with routine lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to safely operate a vehicle in varying weather, traffic, and road conditions.
  • Requires the ability to use a computer, standard office equipment, and organizational software systems to complete required documentation and communication tasks.
