Substitute Youth Development Professional (Substitute YDP)

Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County & Southern Utah

Position Type: Part-Time, Hourly, As Needed

Location: Washington County Schools (Panorama, Sandstone, Sunset, Paradise Canyon, Heritage, Legacy, Washington & Red Mountain Elementary)

Hourly Range: $15-18 per hour (depending on experience)

Reports to: Site Director or Site Coordinator (as assigned)

Position Summary

The Substitute Youth Development Professional (Substitute YDP) provides coverage at various program sites when regularly scheduled staff are absent. Substitute YDPs are responsible for fostering positive relationships with youth, staff, families, and school personnel while maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment. They support the delivery of high-quality youth development programming through active supervision, engagement, and positive role modeling.

Substitute YDPs play an important role in ensuring program continuity and helping create a safe, welcoming, and enriching experience for all youth participants.

Site Assignment

Substitute YDPs may be assigned to different school sites based on staffing needs and program operations. Assignments may vary daily and are not guaranteed on a regular schedule.

Schedule & Availability Expectations

Work schedules are determined based on program needs and staff absences.

Substitute YDPs are expected to:

  • Maintain flexibility and availability to accept shifts on short notice when possible.
  • Arrive on time and work assigned shifts.
  • Communicate availability and scheduling conflicts promptly.
  • Follow site schedules, procedures, and staff direction.
  • Attend required trainings as assigned.
  • Teach preplanned lessons to students

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Youth Engagement & Supervision

  • Build positive relationships with youth through active engagement and mentorship.
  • Provide active supervision and maintain a safe environment.
  • Participate in games, recreation, and enrichment activities.
  • Lead or assist with physical activities, including sports and playground games.
  • Supervise outdoor activities and recess in varying weather conditions.

Social & Emotional Development

  • Support youth emotional well-being and personal growth.
  • Model positive communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Promote inclusion, empathy, and respect among participants.
  • Assist youth in developing social and emotional skills.

Program Support

  • Follow lesson plans and activity schedules provided by site staff.
  • Assist with attendance tracking and program documentation as directed.
  • Maintain organized program spaces and materials.
  • Follow all organizational policies and procedures.

  • Support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to actively supervise youth indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and participate in recreational activities for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry program materials as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth ages 5–12 or 13–18 in an educational or youth development setting.
  • Experience working on a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different sites, staff teams, and program environments.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and general computer applications preferred.
