Safety and Risk Management Director

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Safety and Risk Management Director (SRMD) is a senior leadership role charged with creating, driving, and sustaining a culture of safety across all BGCWV sites. Reporting directly to the Sr. Director of Operations, the SRMD is a subject-matter expert responsible for setting strategic safety priorities and delivering measurable results. The SRMD provides immediate and effective leadership in the implementation of comprehensive safety programs, ensuring the safety of youth, staff, visitors, and facilities in alignment with BGCA’s standards and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate will be a confident, proactive safety leader with demonstrated success managing safety from an organizational perspective. This individual must be prepared to assess and improve existing protocols, drive accountability across departments, and lead staff with clarity and urgency on all matters related to child and club safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Safety Leadership

• Serve as the organization's lead safety strategist, setting annual safety objectives and integrating them into Club-wide goals.
• Establish and enforce safety policies and procedures that promote a proactive, prevention-focused culture.
• Act as the primary advisor to the CEO and Sr. Director of Operations on all matters of organizational risk and safety.
• Ensure full compliance with BGCA safety mandates, ADA regulations, state childcare laws, and health/building codes.
• Develop and lead a long-term safety roadmap, including audit schedules, staff accountability systems, and data-informed improvement plans.

Safety Program Management

• Conduct regular and surprise safety audits and inspections across all locations.
• Lead all required safety training and certification programs, especially in Youth Protection, Emergency Response, and Incident Management.
• Manage the safety calendar including drills, inspections, compliance checks, and maintenance follow-ups.
• Ensure effective implementation of background check and clearance protocols for all staff and volunteers.
• Drive vehicle, facility, and transportation safety initiatives—including maintenance protocols and driver safety training.

Risk & Compliance Oversight

• Own the incident reporting and investigation process—analyzing trends, reporting outcomes, and driving changes.
• Maintain accurate documentation and prepare reports for senior leadership, funders, and licensing agencies.
• Lead efforts to prevent injuries, fire hazards, food safety violations, and other accidents.
• Implement and oversee digital tracking and reporting systems to monitor safety metrics.

Staff Development & Accountability

• Immediately establish clear safety expectations for all site leaders and program staff.
• Coach managers and frontline staff in real time to ensure full adherence to policies.
• Collaborate with HR and site directors to correct unsafe behaviors and build team-wide accountability.
• Create and facilitate organization-wide training on an ongoing basis.
• Lead organization-wide annual Safety Day and regular workshops in partnership with internal and external experts.

Community & Board Engagement

• Chair the Safety Committee, engaging Board members and external safety professionals to guide initiatives.
• Represent BGCWV at city, school district, and community safety planning meetings.
• Develop strategic partnerships with first responders, public health departments, and emergency services.
• Position BGCWV as a designated community evacuation or emergency resource center.

Facility Rental Oversight

• Oversee safety procedures for rental events, including onsite safety supervision.
• Ensure safe use of Club facilities by third-party groups in accordance with rental agreements and Club policies.

Communications & Public Relations

• Work with Marketing to produce safety communications for families, staff, and the community.
• Promote transparency and safety education via newsletters, signage, website content, and digital alerts.

Budget & Resource Management

• Develop and manage safety-related budgets in collaboration with finance and philanthropy departments.
• Identify funding opportunities and oversee grants dedicated to safety programming and equipment.
• Secure in-kind or volunteer support for emergency preparedness, training, or facility upgrades.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum 3 years of senior-level experience in safety leadership, preferably in youth services, education, recreation, or nonprofit sectors.
• College degree from an accredited university.
• Proven success implementing and enforcing organizational-wide safety systems.
• Extensive knowledge of youth protection, risk management, emergency response planning, and facility/transportation safety.
• Excellent communicator with the confidence to lead difficult conversations and drive cultural change.
• Strong leadership, decision-making, and interpersonal skills with a high standard of ethics and integrity.
• Familiarity with BGCA Safety standards or similar frameworks is highly desirable.
• CPR, First Aid Certification, and current TB clearance required.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Spanish proficiency is a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to traverse large campuses and inspect facilities indoors and outdoors.
• Will require frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs), travel between sites, and flexible hours including evenings/weekends.
• Frequent interruptions and engagement with youth in high-energy environments are expected.

Pay: $70,350.00 - $73,000.00 per year
