Job description
The Youth Development Professional is responsible for: ensuring youth development principles are incorporated into programs and activities; providing guidance and discipline to ensure a safe and positive environment for you; ensuring the incorporation of character development, age appropriate programs and activities; ensuring that cultural diversity programs are implemented; assisting in the planning, implementation, and delivery of exciting and engaging educational activities and programs for youth ages 5 to 18; maintaining and caring for applicable equipment and supplies.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
- Supervises members in a program area. Maintains OCFS regulated ratios at all times. Ensure safety of members, demonstrates positive values and ethical behavior.
- Enforces Club Rules, Policy, Procedures and Code of Conduct.
- Promotes and stimulates program participation using a positive youth development approach.
- Maintains accurate program and attendance records and submits them in a timely manner.
- Maintains positive relations with members, their parents, fellow staff, volunteers, and community members.
- Displays a high level of enthusiasm and commitment for activities.
- Develops quarterly, monthly, and weekly program plans and completes weekly progress reports for each program.
- Prepares weekly lesson plans and programs progress reports and submits them to the Program Coordinator.
- Supervises youth on field trips and at special events.
- Advocates for parental involvement. Recruits parents for participation in family focused activities and involvement in parenting education programs.
- Leads large group high-yield activities for youth in a program area.
- Cooperates with community partners to create learning opportunities and character building activities for members.
- Helps members with school homework, research, labs, extra credit assignments, computer issues, and other projects for academic success.
- Help members develop skills for job readiness, including resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, market research, and other work related life skills.
- Tutors incorporate education and literacy in programs when feasible.
- Works within a team to ensure the success of specific after school programs, either as a member of the Goals for Graduation program or the School Age Child Care program.
- Receives and carries out instructions from a team leader or a senior staff member and exercises sound judgment in the event a supervisor is not present.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- May be required to drive Club Van/Bus periodically.
- Responsible for running particular programs Men of the Future, Smart Girls, etc.
- Maintains overall Clubhouse cleanliness, including preparing the Club to be “tour ready” before leaving the facility at the end of the work shift.
- Participates in and/or leads field trips, community service projects, and special events.
- Attends and participates in center pre-service and in-service trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
- Participates in the Clubs self-evaluation process and grantee monitoring visits, as continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
- Attends safety training, monthly all-staff, and weekly program staff team meetings, completes professional development training online through BGCA.NET, and participates in regional TPA training events.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and management staff.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma.
- Valid New York State Driver’s License.
- Work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or another youth organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
- Demonstrated organizational, staff and project management abilities.
- Preferred CPR and First Aid Certifications.
