Job Description
This is a volunteer on-site role as a STEM Mentor with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield in Westfield, MA. As a STEM Mentor, you will volunteer once a week with our third graders, leading engaging STEM activities and projects that we provide.
We ask for a commitment throughout the school year, from September to June. However, we understand the need for flexibility and can accommodate occasional scheduling needs. The program runs from 4:00 to 5:00 PM, and volunteers are asked to arrive by 3:30 PM to review materials, address any questions, and help prepare the room. In this role, you will help foster problem-solving skills and ensure an inclusive, positive learning environment for all participants.
Responsibilities
• Support and guide students during hands-on STEM activities and projects
• Review provided materials ahead of each session and arrive by 3:30 PM for preparation
• Encourage curiosity, creativity, and positive engagement
• Assist students with teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking
• Help maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning space
• Collaborate with staff and fellow mentors during weekly sessions
Qualifications
• Interest in working with kids and supporting their learning
• Ability to communicate clearly and positively with elementary-aged students
• Responsible, reliable, and able to commit to one session per week
• Team-oriented and able to collaborate with staff and other volunteers
• No STEM expertise required. All materials and instructions are provided
• Experience working with youth is helpful but not required
